Notes for Edward Capehart O'Kelley:
Refer to: "Ed O'Kelley, The Man Who Murdered Jesse James' Murderer," by Judith Reis, Affton, Missouri.
Margaret Capehart was pregnant when she married Dr. O'Kelley either by another man or by the good doctor. In either event, because of the moors of the times Dr. O'Kelley made his wife chose between himself and the unborn baby. She decided to stay with her husband and, upon the baby's birth, he was turned over to Margaret's mother to raise. The grandmother took the boy to Arkansas.
Later, after Dr. O'Kelley had bought a sizeable piece of land and built a new house, Margaret had her three sisters and mother build houses on the four corners of Dr. O'Kelley's property.Even though Ed O'Kelley lived on the doctor's property, he was never allowed into his parent's house.
In 1891 Ed was raised without his parent's love and it is though this made him have bad character. Ed O'Kelley killed a black man (Karse) for no reason other than he was black, but O'Kelley was found not guilty at his trial. Then on June 8, 1892 Ed O'Kelley blew a hole through Bob Ford's neck with a shot gun.He pleaded self-defense but was sentenced to life at his trial.
O'Kelley served 18 years of his sentence when the governor of Colorado commuted his sentence and O'Kelley was released in 1902.O'Kelley was killed in a street fight in Oklahoma City January 13, 1904.
