The family of John Baptiste Harpstrite lived at Ettenheim, in the grand duchy of Baden, Germany.John and his wife Sophia Rawer, had two sons, Anthony and Edward, and a daughter, Mary.Upon Sophia’s death, John remarried to Mary Ramer. Before leaving their native Germany in the year of 1833 to journey to America, they had one son, Augustus. The family landed in New Jersey, but soon moved on to Reading, Pennsylvania and settled there for a time.It is assumed that Julia was born (1834) during their stay in Pennsylvania.Again a move was made and this time to Dayton, Ohio, for a period of two years.Their next move was to Delphie, Indiana, thence to Terre Haute, Indiana, where they remained three years. Here the youngest son, Charles, was born. Then during the year known as the high water of Mississippi River of 1844, the family pressed still further westward, to what was then known as Wolf Ridge, in what is now Lookingglass Township in Clinton County, Illinois, where a farm of 240 acres of the richest land in this section was bought for $400 from C. Pittman and wife of City and County of New York, evidently land speculators. This family tree includes the ancestors of each of the Harpstrite children, but the research is still incomplete, and always expanding as the generations also grow.Any information would be appreciated.I am also willing to share the information that I have.
