In the History of Butler County, Alabama, by Buckner Litte, "Elijah Manning brought his negroes to this place in the Fall of 1818, and pitched the first tent on this soil.He brought his family from Georgia the next year, and was followed in 1820 by his cousin, Benjamin Manning.Both put up mills on Wolf Creek.The Postmaster General named the office "Manningham" in honor of the first Post Master, Elijah Manning."
