Meyer Families of Cass County, IllinoisUpdated July 24, 2008
|My brother, Elmer Benjamin Peck was researching the Meier/Meyer family with just paper and pencil. When he passed away in 1981, his paper notes were passed on to me. That got me interested since I had retired from 30 years in the Navy in 1979, and from my after-retirement job at Georgetown University Hospital in 1990. I began with just relatives on my mothers side of the family. Her grandfather, Herman Meier was married to Louisa Niemann, dau of Casper and Eliza Hanrath Niemann. Herman and his brothers, Henry Caspar, John Frederick, Karl Heinrich and George Heinrich Meier came to Cass County Illinois between 1840 - 1870. They had lots of children, grandchildren, etc. It appeared as if the entire county was related by either blood or marriage. I finally decided to include the entire county of Cass, and now have a database of over 130,000 individuals. |
Am always glad to receive new and corrective information. My ancestors were: MEIER, NIEMANN, ROCHE, MUHLERT, WINHOLD, WEBER, PECK, HUFFMAN, EASTON, MILLER..
My nephew, Greg Croxton - whose Grandmother Croxton and his mother were both Peck's, is very active in the Schuyler Jail Museum and Genealogical Center. He provides me with CD-ROM's of the obituaries in the Schuyler Newspapers. He also has hundreds of pictures of tombstones in the Schuyler Area (as I have from the Cass County cemeteries).
I have started to enter/ data into 'OneWorldTree' A lot of individuals have entered data I disagree with. i.e. they enter Jan 1 2000 as a death date for all their individuals for whom they have no death dates.I am correcting these with data from my 'Cass County data base' which I hope is correct. They can accept the new data or leave their old data online, as they wish.Email me if any questions, additions/deletions.
I am now adding the census data for Cass County into my Cass County database. Beardstown is taking forever. I am also entering all the data from over 4000 Cass County men who had to sign up for the 1917-198 WWI Draft Registration.
I have signed up for access to Genealogy.com which includes OneWorldTree and now each entry I make from any available data I check against OneWorldTree. If I have newer data, I update OneWorldTree with the newer data I have abstracted.
My original Cass County database maxed out at 128,000 individuals - Family Tree Maker people say it is limited by file size and not the number of individuals - and my file crashed.I had to re-enter the data into two files which I named Peck.FTW and Cass.Ftw - which was very time consuming and is ongoing.
PS: I had someone ask me if I was related to Meier from Cass County, IL.They were youngsters and did not know that Meier was changed to Meyer by a lot of families in Cass County in 1917.The families did not like the discrimination against Germans.Meier was considered German Nazi, while Meyer was considered German Jewish. My two bachelor Uncle's kept Meier but their siblings all changed to Meyer. The tombstones for my grandparents and two uncle's in Arenzville have "MEIER" - see pictures below.
