| At this time, 2008, there are seven generations of Browns who are direct descendants of John Brown & Janet Granger of Strathaven (Lanarkshire) Scotland.John and his family came to Canada in 1864, settling in or around St. Marys, Ontario. In about 1878 they moved to St. Joseph Island. Some years ago I was told that Janet died in Scotland. However, I have a newspaper clipping where Jessie Fisher (granddaughter of John & Janet) is quoted as saying, "I remember my mother who came out the same year with her parents, Mr.& Mrs. John Brown, telling me of running short of food during the six week trip.On top of all this, grandfather fell on board ship and broke his arm, and my grandmother was frantic with worry over what she would do to provide for the large family."Mrs. Brown put her girls all out to work.I am still looking through death and cemetary records to see if I can confirm that Janet died prior to the family moving to the Island. I would be grateful for all and any information you can provide about the Brown Family.
