The Begining--Flint & Charity Peeples During 1999, Mr. Edgar A. Brisbon of Maple wood, New Jersey, visited family members in South Carolina. We found out that Edgar is a member of the Peeples family. Edgar was gathering historical information on his roots which led him to the Peeples family in Blackville, South Carolina. He had obtained information on Flint and Charity Peeples from several historical sources, and advised us that they were the father and mother of Clonia Peeples. According to Mr. Brisbon, Flint and Charity Peeples were born as slaves in 1809 and 1815, respectively, and they died between 1881 & 1889.Flint and Charity had three sons (including Allen) and two daughters (Cloanna Peeples-born 1847).Mr. Brisbon identifies CloannaPeeples as the mother of Walter Peeples. Our family elders have verified that Walter Peeples' mother was named Clonia. There are also familiar first names in Flint and Charity Peeples' family.Walter Peeples had a son named "Allen" and a daughter named "Clonia ".Allen was probably named after Walter Peeples' uncle Allen and Clonia after his mother. This pattern of naming sibling after elder family members continues today in many of our family branches. There are many repetitive names throughout this family book which represents the honoring of our elder family members. There are several members of our family named "Walter", "Allen", "George", "Mamie", "Lizzy" and many other names in honor of family elders. Therefore, Edgar Brisbon's representations identifying our family as descendents of Flint and Charity Peeples appears to be accurate. Edgar's research also identified that Flint and Charity Peeples were slaves on the Peeples Plantation which was located in the area around Frost Branch Baptist church.Further , when the children of Flint and Charity Peeples were freed, some of them reportedly took the last name of their plantation owner ( "Peeples") while others took a different last names.Edgar's is a descendent ofHandy Flims, a son of Flint & Charity, who apparently decided to take a different last name.
