Researching the African-American PHIFER family and any related families from Arkadelphia, Malvern, El Dorado, Hot Springs, Pine Bluff & Little Rock, Arkansas or residing in Ashley, Garland, Jefferson, Hot Spring, Pulaski, Clark, Ouachita, Dallas and Union (Phifer & Fletcher's) counties of Arkansas, and the states of Michigan, Ohio, California, Oklahoma, Georgia, Texas, North and South Carolina. The oral history that I am currently researching is that the PHIFER'S were slaves of a slaveholder named John Miller DOBY, who resided in Lancaster, South Carolina and owned property in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and Lancaster County, South Carolina. In 1855, DOBY sold his business(es) and land and moved to Arkansas, accompanied by the GRIER family from Stelle Creek in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, WHITE, BOYCE, NISBET, McGILL's from York and Lancaster counties in South Carolina, STEWART and STITT families. One descendant wrote that there were about 120 wagons in the wagon train when it crossed the North Carolina mountains into Tennessee. The PHIFER'S, along with the STEWART, BURTON, STEPHENS, DIXON and STITT slaves (Memoirs of Robert H. PATTERSON; The Clark County (AR) Historical Journal, Fall 1982, p. 115) and other surnamed slaves yet to be identified were transported from North/South Carolina to Arkansas. The DOBY family eventually settled in Clark County, Arkansas and built a town later known as Dobyville. If the information can be documented, it would provide a when and where the PHIFER, STEWART STEPHENS, DIXON and STITT families came to be in Clark County, Arkansas.
