Alford Adair (b. April 11, 1909, d. January 13, 1927)
Notes for Alford Adair:
Alford Adair was the youngest child in the family and was only 3 years old when his mother died. When Amer Adair died there were 5 children between the ages of 10 and 3.Mother left the farm and went to Carnesville to live with her grandmother, Mollie Hayes.Apparently the boys Marvin, Vas, Clay and Alford stayed with their father on the farm but this is unclear and just an assumption on my part.
Life was very hard and when Alford was about 16 or so he left home looking for work.He had heard about oil being discovered in Oklahoma and there were jobs there. He caught the train as a hobo and made his way to Oklahoma and worked for a brief time on various oil drilling rigs.He was under age and was terminated when the drilling company learned his age.He then started back home, riding the train as a hobo.
Somewhere in Alabama he was spending the night in the woods at a hobo camp with a group of men.His clothes were dirty and soaked with oil from his work on the drilling rigs.He went to sleep beside a fire and his cloths caught on fire.He was severely burned and died.
Mother and Daddy were living in Anderson and they were notified of his death. They immediately went to Alabama to identify him and arrange to have him returned home for burial. He was 17 years old.Mother was 24.
