I am researching the two lines John William Phillips (born 1906, died 1965) and Edna Mary Pearson (born 1906, died 1996) - being my parents. I have some information back to my mothers great grandparents being John Pearson -born circa 1816 in Eccles,Lancashire and Ellen McLoughlin - born circa 1816 in Ireland (no other details) So far, (August 2007), I have traced my father's line only to his grandfather - a John Phillips, born circa 1824 and his wife - Martha Phillips, premarital surname unknown, born circa 1833. From the 1851 England Census John Phillips had a younger brother - Thomas (Thomas was also the name given by John to his eldest son - my grand father) and an older sister -Jane. IF - this is correct, John's (their) mother was Elizabeth, born S.Wales in 1786. In the 1851 Census, Elizabeth is a widow. John gave his eldest child the name Elizabeth J.(probably-Jane). March 2008: My father - John William Phillips (named after his father's younger brother, also JWP) made mention that his grand father was a blacksmith from Tredegar - South Wales. However, his paternal gran father was John Phillips, born Pembroke. S.Wales who appears to have been a carpenter and later a Pattern Maker in the Engineering foundries in Manchester. However, it is possible that his maternal grandfather was a George Owen or Owens -ablacksmith shown in the 1841 Census as living in Bury Lancs but not born in Bury. The Census shows a whole community of blacksmiths living in the locality. His wife was Martha-and it appears that their daughter-Martha married John Phillips. |
