SOME EARLY COLONIAL FAMILIES MOVING WEST The BOWEN and CLARY'S I am researching the ancestors of John Robert BOWEN, who was born in 1874 in Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri. He was the son of William Reese BOWEN - a descendant of Moses BOWEN who came from Wales about 1698 and settled in Guinnedd township,Chester County, Pennsylvania - and Elizabeth E. WILSON. William Reese BOWEN was born in 1835 in Pickens County, South Carolina. At the first outbreak of war, he left his position as Agent/Bookeeper in Pickens County and was one of the first volunteers in Col. Black's regiment - 1st S.C. Volunteer Cavalry (CSA). He saw action at Gettysburg, Brandystation, and Upperville. After the war he migrated to Chilowhee, Johnson County, Missouri, where he farmed and was elected to two terms as county assessor. He married in 1872 and had 5 children. He died in 1914. John Robert BOWEN married Margaret Arminda CLARY, who was born in 1884 in Henry County, Missouri. Margaret CLARY was the daughter of William Rutherford CLARY, born 1853 Overton County, TN and Sarah E. SIMS. The CLARY's migrated to Henry County, MO from Overton County, TN in 1860. In 1902 William R. took his family to North Dakota for a short time, then went on to Wenatchee, Washington where he became a successful salesman of tombstones.William R. CLARY was the son of John Harvey CLARY b. 1830 TN and Lavina SEVIER b. 1833 TN. Lavina was the daughter of Abraham Rutherford SEVIER- descendant of pioneer Valentine SEVIER - and Mary COLSON.John CLARY was the son of Agrippa CLARY and Lucinda HARVEY. Agrippa is descended from the long line of CLARY's who settled in Virginia/Maryland in the 1600's. The HARVEY's also arrived here in the colonial times. John Bowen and Margaret CLARY migrated to the fruit orchards of Eastern Washington State in 1904 where they worked and owned apple orchards in various localities, raised a family of 7, and moved to Bellingham, Washington about 1924. The PHILLIPS/MATHERLY and NEWTON Families My Phillips line begins with Mason PHILLIPS, b. 1800 in SC but went to Tennessee shortly thereafter. He married Debbie KENDRICK, b. 1803 in SC, in Lauderdale County, Alabama in 1826. Mason was a riverboat captain on the Tennessee River. They moved with other KENDRICK's and the GRAHAM'S to Washington County (now Benton), Arkansas in 1831, where they farmed and raised a large family of 13.Mason, who died in 1877, and Debbie, who died in 1863, are buried in the PHILLIPS Cemetery in Benton County, AR. Their son William C. PHILLIPS married Lucinda GRAHAM, daughter of Nelson Reed GRAHAM (another colonial family) and Susan Louisa LANDERS. William C. was conscripted into the Confederate Army, but he deserted and enlisted in the 2nd Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry Volunteers, Union Army. His son Joseph Burton PHILLIPS, b. 1862 married Josephine "Josie" Elizabeth MATHERLY in 1884. Josie was born in Paige County,Iowa in 1866 to John Wesley MATHERLY and Elizabeth Jane EDWARDS.Elizabeth Jane EDWARDS is descended from the early EDWARDS (Abel EDWARDS b. 1759)family.John Wesley MATHERLY and his father John Wesley MATHERLY both served in the Union Army, (3rd Reg, Co. E, Missouri Cavalry Volunteers) with John Wesley Sr. succumbing to disentary and he died in 1863. They are descended from John EDWARDS and "Patsy" POTTS who were in Estill County, KY in the early 1800's. Joseph Burton PHILLIPS and Josie MATHERLY traveled with her parents and other PHILLIPS family members in covered wagons, leaving Arkansas in 1885 and arriving in the wheat country of Eastern Washington and Idaho in 1889.They settled in Davenport, Washington where Joseph owned 420 acres of wheat, as well being a successful business owner of the local hardware store 'in town'. The NEWTON's William G. NEWTON was a newspaper editor, born in Muscatine, Iowa 1858.He married Elizabeth M. King.Lots of research needed on this fam |
