Poe of Hitt, Missouri and Ina Reed of Downing, Missouri, married at Downing on the fifth of February 1902 by N.F. Mathews, P.C, Downing, Missouri.Witnesses were Isa D. Mathews and Etta B. Mathews.
In 1903, they purchased their first farm, seventy acres in Schuyler County, Missouri near Downing, Missouri, in Independence Township 66 N, Range 13 W. He was also one of the first in the area to own a car, a 1908 Baby Overland Town car.
A keepsake record is a sale bill from Harris Motor Company in Memphis, Missouri, for a new car Otis purchased March 30, 1938.The terms set out indicate how business was conducted at that time utilizing assets available. The car was a new 1938 Chevrolet Deluxe Town sedan, black in color with a price shown as $800.A grille guard was added costing $2.50 as were mud grip tires costing $5.00, tax was $16.15 for total cost of the new car totaling $823.65.The terms of the sale included the trade of Otis' 1929 Durant sedan amounting to $105, a check for $233.65, one bay mare with a value of $85, and six heifers valued at $50 each--$300.The amount for the sedan, check, the bay mare, and heifers totaled $823.65 paid in full for the new car.One stipulation was set out on the sale bill, that the buyer "agrees to keep heifers for two weeks from date at no charge."A family member recalled the bay mare's name to be "Rose Marie."
In 1925 Otis and Ina built a ten room house at the farmstead in front of the original farmhouse and the house has continued to serve as the home of descendant owners of the farm. The house was one of the first in the area to have a modern bathroom. It was equipped with a system that provided power for lighting prior to rural electrification installation. The house was built next to a pear tree which at the time was estimated to be at least twenty-five years old, according to early pictures with members of the family standing near. The pear tree weathered many storms for 100 years until a windstorm blew it over in 2001.

In 1926 Eugene became Manager of the Co-Operative Association #276 in Downing, Missouri where he remained for the next twenty-four and one-half years. The Co-Op, located on the corner across from the post office, was an important part of the community, serving the needs of patrons through farm supplies as well as a large grocery store.Eugene was a respected businessman and very supportive of families suffering during the depression of the 1930's, trading staple products for whatever the patron might have to trade, even as the story is often told, dead wild rabbits which were later shipped to Chicago. The Co-Op employed several people in both the farm products store and grocery store including among others, his brother, Forest Poe and cousin, Ethel McRoberts Newland. They returned to Downing and it was several days before the roads had dried enough to return to Rutledge. On February 22, 1927, they purchased their first home located at the northwest corner of what is now Highway 136 and Route A in Downing and described as Lots 7,8,9,10,11,12 and 13 in Block 27 in the Original Town, now City of Downing, Missouri, from Minnie A and John McWilliam for the sum of $2,600 as recorded in Book 69 at page 304 in the Schuyler County Recorder's Office.
