Jefferson Welch (b. June 26, 1840, d. July 02, 1930)
Notes for Jefferson Welch:
Jefferson served during the Civil War as a Private in Company H 59th Georgia
Infantry. He told the familyand retold the family he was standing nearby when General
Lee surrendered at Appomattox, He often spoke of the soldiers had to march over rocky
ground barefooted with bleeding feet and how many of them fell by the wayside and died
from exposure and neglect. He never really recovered from physically or emotionally from
his war experiences.
He surrendered April 9, 1865 at Appomattox, VA.
