RATHJEN family research for the United Kingdom branches is soon to be completed. It stems from Heinrich RATHJEN who arrived in the port of Leith near Edinburgh, Scotland on 4th November 1830 and on October 30, 1835 married Anne STRATTON, the daughter of a Leith Customs Officer.I am his great grandson. We now know that Heinrich (he later changed his name to Henry) came from Stubben, near Bremerhaven on the River Weser. He was born on 8th October 1814, his brother Martin was born on 7th August 1816 and sister Cathrina Margreta was born on 12th February 1819. Their father was Johann Hinrich Ratjen a Baumann (farmer)born 1783(son of Hinrich Ratjen of Stubben born 28th March 1758) and mother was Anna Schmidt born 3rd November 1787 in Marssel. Hanover at the time was an independent State with close links with the United Kingdom. Although Heinrich was the eldest son and entitled to inherit the farm he left home and became a sugar boiler and worked in the sugar houses in Leith and Greenock, Scotland. This might have been because his father married again and had another son and daughter and the new wife wanted the farm for her own son.Or Heinrich was adventurous and wanted a life away from the farm. I am searching for links with the extensive Rathjen family in Hanover to establish further links before 1758.All information would be gratefully received. Thank you. All my information is freely available to others on Rathjen family research.
