|John Robert Ratje|

|I am researching the Ratje family -- particularly Johann Heinrich Ratje (aka John Henrig Ratje) who arrived in the U.S. November 30, 1845. He came to the United States on the brig Eliza Thornton entering through the port of New Orleans, Louisana. The brig Eliza Thornton carried a number of German families bound for Camp Cole, Missouri.Other surnames were Ringen, Brunges, Ehlers, Balke, Schluesing, etc. The passenger list had him listed as J. H. Rathsen, age 23. Apparently on the original passenger list the last two or three letters of the last name are written over like the writer was not sure of the spelling.|
Johann was involved for a short time in the Mexican War. He then farmed near Smithton, Missouri. I am most interested in his European roots and how he may tie in to the 100+ families in Germany who share this surname. Any information is appreciated -- I am happy to share information with others.
