Message: The Skipwith family name was once De Estoville and it's origins are from France as well. The same history of coming from Normandy with William the Conqueror in 1066 is found in researching the Skipwith's. I found that the name changed when one of the De Estoville Gents gave to his son the land of Skypwyck in England. The son eventually took on the name Patrick De Estoville of Skypwck and soon dropped the De Estoville. The first Skipwith to arrive in America was Sir Grey Skipwith. He settled in Virginia where today a the skipwith plantation "Prestwould" has been renovated and serves as a museum. Prestwould was also the name of the Skipwith castle in England. These two families are most definitely from the same tree and it's amazing all the history that connects the two. There is a book on the Skipwith's of Virginia and their relationship with their emancipated slave family called "Dear Master: Letters of a slave family". It mentions the travels of Sir Peyton Skipwith from his Virginia plantation to his Kentucky/Tennessee Land. There is a Skipwith message board on FamilyHistory.com and you may visit it to find some of the similarities. One of the last knighted Skipwiths in America was Sir Grey Skipwith who was married to a Russian Princess (Sophy Dolgorousky)supposedly descended from Russian royalty. Though they did not stay married I was able to find some information on them. I believe Sir Grey Skipwith returned to England in the 1930's or 1950's. Here's something on Sophy Skipwith I found:
Skipwith, Sofka. SOFKA: The Autobiography of a Princess. Rupert Hart-Davis (London), 1968. 284 pp. Illustrated with photos. Memoirs of a Russian princess, born Sophy Dolgorousky in 1907, into a family whose origins went back to back to 860 and the first prince of Kiev.. Hardcover. NO dustjacket. Owner's name on ffe.
