Lynnwas struck with polio on April 24, 1944, in Avon Park, FL.Within two weeks, the family doctor, Dr. Touchton, was able to secure a place for Lynn at the Warm Springs Foundation in Warm Springs, GA.This hospital was one of a very few treating polio patients in the United States at that time.Lynn stayed at the foundation for 8 months while undergoing treatment with physical therapy and "hot packs."While Lynn was at the foundation, Pres. Franklin Roosevelt came there for Thanksgiving.A banquet was held and the president and all patients who were able attended.Lynn was in a little dramatic skit as part of the program.Also attending this banquet was the film actress, Bette Davis. At the end of the dinner, the president sat in his wheelchair at the doorway and shook hands and said a few words with each person.
Lynn returned to Warm Springs frequently for check-ups.In 1947, Lynn returned for some necessary surgery on her right foot and ankle.That stay was for about 4 months.
Lynn was permanently released from Warm Springs when she was 18 years old.The doctors decided that her growth was probably complete and her crooked spine would not get any worse--or better--from then on.
Lynn graduated from Avon Park High School in 1951.She was valedictorian of her class--of 39 students.
She then attended Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, majoring in music education.She graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education in 1955.Over the following years, Lynn taught public school music, directed church music in several places, taught private piano lessons, and stayed actively involved in choirs in her church, wherever she lived.
