Notes for THERESA PICHOT:
Theresa's familylived in Castroville. During the timeshe was a teenager there had been a number of reports of Indians stealinglivestock. Theresa had a horse that sheprized greatly. To make sure that herhorse didn't get stolen, she would tie it to her bed with its head inside herwindow at night. One night somethingwoke her. When she opened her eyes therewas an Indian in her bedroom. She didn'tmove and kept her eyes shut. When sheoepend them again the Indian was gone and the rope tied to her bed had beencut. The horse was gone and she neversaw it again.

Notes for JOSEPH HENRY BRIEDEN:
Joseph was the third boy out of five. All five boys were born in Alsace near thetown of Colmer France to Andreas Brieden and Elizabeth Zuercher. Joseph was about 3 years old when they cameto the United States, about 1846 (1850 census, Vandenburg Texas). They settled in the Vandenburg community,West of Quihi and Northwest of Hondo. His family farmed 20 acres on Arroyo Verde, growing crops and raisinglivestock.
In later years they purchased property inD'Hanis and farmed on the Seco. It wasnear the wagon freight haul route from Port Lavaca to Mexico. Joseph, his father and brothers, joined thewagon frieght train hauling freight from Port Lavaca to Mexico and made a goodliving. They would wait for a ship tocome in, load the ox-drawn wagon and honor the consignment. In Mexico, for example, for the return tripto the coast they would gather a load of coffee and piloncillo mostly forEurope. For security they had to travelin groups or trains as protection against bandits and Indians (Tschirthart, library 197). Joseph and his brothershad several near run in with the Indians. Two of the boys were gathering grass for a thatch roof when they stoppeda group of Indians. The boys left theirhorses and hid in some tall grass. TheIndians took their horses but didn't find the boys. They stayed hidden until nightfall and thenmade their way home on foot. Leapold,Josephs younger brother, had another close call when Indians began to chase himwhile riding one day. He rode up ahillside and the Indians did not follow. It is supposed that the Indians suspected an ambush over the hilland this allowed Leapold to escape(Tschirthart, libary 198).
After Joseph's mother was found drown,Louise being the oldest girl had most of the responsibility of the home whenthe menfolks were out on frieght routes. They lived in a low stone house with a grass roof.
Joseph's father was well educated andtaught him and his other brothers and sisters to read and write the English andGerman language.
He would make homemade wine in the cellar.
Helped build theboat. Would make homemade molasses outof sugar cane. Tended to the fields withhis son William. Died there at the home

14. WILLIAM LEO6 BRIEDEN (THERESA5 PICHOT, JEAN NICHOLAUS4, JEAN (JOHN) NICHOLAS3, OGIER2, ANDRE1) was born April 11, 1873 in Castroville, Medina, Texas, and died June 24, 1931 inCastroville, Medina, Texas. He married ALVINA MARIE TUERPE October 10, 1900 in San Antonio,Bexar, Texas, daughter of RICHARD TUERPE and CAROLINE BIPPERT. She was bornSeptember 13, 1877 in Rio Medina, Medina, Texas, and died March 24, 1977 in San Antonio, Bexar, Texas.
Notes for WILLIAM LEO BRIEDEN:
He and Alvina lived with his parents andfarmed and worked the land that his mother (Theresa Pichot) inherited from herfather. The 80 acres East of the MedinaRiver. William's only brother Henry diedfrom a gun shot wound, Febuary 7, 1900, he was 31 years old. This left William only to tend to thefarming.
They were going on a hunting trip,William, Henry, Albert Pichot (Williams Uncle) and Fritz Tuerpe (William'sbrother-in-law, Alivina's brother). Theywhere in a wagon and Albert was sitting in front, William, Henry and Fritzsitting in the back of the wagon. Everyone unloaded their guns and then they wrapped them up in thebedding in the back of the wagon. They were way out already on the road andthey were getting tired of sitting there and they either moved their beddingaround or hit a bump in the road when all of a sudden a gun went off. It hit Henry in the back. The doctor said the bullet was logged in hisspine and there was really nothing they could do. They went back to Uvaldewhere Albert and Mary Pichot lived, he stayed for maybe three months. Then his mother wanted him home, so theymoved him home, he lived 3 years? (Alvina 1973)
William Brieden was a heavy smoker andwould order his tabaco leaves from some company and they would send it to himin bulk. He would lay them out and dryit in the sun. Then he would take it andremove the stems and rub it between his hands to make it fine to be able toroll it in the little papers to smoke. He would keep all his things up on the fireplace mantel. He would get up during the night when couldnot sleep to smake a cigarette (Laura Brieden 1996).
When the river was high people would beunable to cross. There was a crossingpoint about were the bridge is now. Theywould come by the Briedens house and Gramdpa Brieden, Leopold, and Papa(William) would farry them across. Theywould strattle the buggy across the top of the boat. Then they would come back and pick up the passengersand take them across (Carrie Brieden 1977). 6 people could fit in the boat. Grandpa Brieden (Joseph) and his brother Leopold (or Uncle Henry?,Papa's brother) built it out of cypress trees. It was very heavy and it would not turn over. When Richy and Leonard's friend would comeover they would try, but could never tip it (Carrie Brieden 1973).
William Brieden died August 4, 1924 (June24, 1931). He was horned by a bull thereon the place. Carrie had gotten marriedand moved to Devine, she just had her first baby Vivian. Alvina (his wife) was over helping Carriewhen it happened. The bull was dehorned, but there were still some of the horn left. He was going to tie the bull up in a shed at night so he would not getout. He would put a chain around thehorns. The bull bucked him with thehorns and threw him up against the wooden pen. Alvina came home and Laura (the youngest child) went to help Carrie withthe new baby. Alvina rapped up hischest, but he would not go to the doctor. They think he had broken a rib and it possibly damage a lung. He was in bed until he died. Everyone tried and tried, to convince him togo to the doctor, but he would not go. One Sunday Leonard came out and convinced him to go, probably aboutthree weeks before he died. Dr.Williamson did send some stuff into the lab but no one really ever heardresults. He was spitting upsomething. That left the two youngestchildren, Richy and Laura, at home with their mother Alvina and William'smother, Theresa Brieden (Laura Brieden 1996).
No one really kept up with the farming andranching after William Died. Richy triedto farm, but could not really keep the farm and ranching going. He finally went out and started doing otherwork. Some of the land was sold to theDeCocks and Karms (Laura Brieden 1996).
- Alvina 1973,personal interview.
Notes for ALVINA MARIE TUERPE:
Her parentssettled in the Haby settlement, the Rio Medina area. She went to school in Rio Medina where the Rio Medina store is now located,San Geronimo School (Photo pg 36 library 1898-1899). Alvina went to school until she was 16 yearsold. Both of her parents were Lutheranand they went to the Lutheran church in Castroville (Alvina Brieden 1973).
She had 3 olderbrothers, Alvina was the baby. She was10 years younger than the youngest brother. Henry, Fritz, and Albert, 10, 12, 14 when she was born. As soon as she started to walk she dideverything she could to keep up with her older brothers. She loved to horse back ride.
She met WilliamBrieden in school. He lived with hisparents in Castroville on the Medina River. William Brieden was Catholic religion, all the Briedens were. People were not against them getting married, but they had to get married by the county judge because they were of differentreligions. They were married in SanAntonio on Oct. 10, 1900. William andAlvina took a wagon to San Antonio and returned to live with William's parents,Joseph Brieden and Theresa Pichot until they both died. Theresa was 90 when she died, Joseph died 7years before her.
(they cant stay in the house all alone, movedto San Antonio between New Years and Christmas moved to San Antonio in 1900until got married in San Antonio??).
They had 5children: Alice, Carrie (Carolina), Leonard,Richy, and Laura, all within about 10 years. All 5 children were baptized and received communion as Catholics. The family got along fine, Alvina went to theLutheran Church, William went to the Catholic Church. All the children were raised in the CatholicChurch. Alvina did start going to theCatholic Church but not until later.
It was when oneof her grandchildren were making their first communion in 1951, there was aparty. She called all the childrentogether at the party to tell them she wanted to become Catholic (FatherLenzen), she was 73 years old at the time. They were all very happy and she was then baptized. Arliss Schott and Patsy Brieden were hersponsors (Alvina 1973).
Alvina and allfive children were traveling in the carriage being pulled by mules. Suddenly two bicyclers came by and scared themules. This turned the carriage around, broke the harness and the mules got loose. Alice kept wanting to jump out, she was always the scared one. Her Mama, Alvina, kept saying, "Keepseated! Keep seated!" They finally slowed down and stopped at thebottom of the hill. They had to walkback home, Alivna was not worried, she knew the mules would be come back. They borrowed a carriage from theNoonans because William was expecting tomeet the family at Alvina's parent's home, Richard and Carolina Tuerpe, he hadgone in ahead to pickup some grain and feed for the cows. Alvina really knew how to drive the team andshe did all the way. Willam was gettingworried and when they did arrive, he noticed they had a different team andcarriage. The family told him what hadhappened (Carrie 1977, Laura 1996).
The family would have to cross the riverto go to the doctor, or fetch the doctor (Dr. Fitzsimon) and they would have topick him up and bring him across. WhenLaura was still a baby, she became sick. He checked her over and told Alvina, she had diptheria. He told her to take her home, if she livesthrough the night, she will be okay. Itwas probably the longest night of Alvina's life, but Laura made it (LauraBrieden Mangold 1996).
Carrie and Alice were at the river onetime and Alice was trying to punch a log away. The stick slipped and she fell in the river. Carrie ran to the house yelling, "Mama! Mama! Alice fell in the river! Alicefell in the river!" Alvina ran backwith Carrie and she reached a limb to Alice and pulled her out. None of the girls could swim, only the boyslearned how (Carrie Brieden Schott 1977).
Alvina did most of the cooking along withworking out in the fields. It was rarethat Theresa Brieden cooked. Thechildren would bring the cows in from the pasture and milk them. Some household chores consisted of turningthe separator to separate the milk from the cream and washing dishes in a dishpan, since they did not have running water in the house. There was a well, a windmill and a tank nearthe home. The water would have to bepumped. When the girls were older theyhelped wash the clothes. They would boilthe white clothes in a large kettle. Homoneywas also made in large kettle, it was cooked until soft and the hulls wouldcome off. The homoney was then wash itreal good. The family would also maketheir own cottage cheese (Schott 1977).
Alvina's children loved cream and molasseswith a little bread. "When GrandmaBrieden would go visiting, Mama (Alvina) would get a little bowl of cream outfor us. She would say, 'Hurry beforegrandma gets home.' It was a realtreat. Grandma Brieden rarely allowed usto eat the cream or butter, only on special occasions. Grandma Brieden went visiting a lot. She was always making Grandpa hook up thecarriage for her. Along with her dairy goodthat she went around town selling, she also had a large vegetable garden. We would have to haul water out there in thewagon. It was pretty rocky outthere." (Schott 1977)
They would always cross the river to gointo town, even to go to the frequent dances held at Wernette's Garden, topstory of the Tondre Store, or in the town square. "Grandpa Brieden and Papa Built stepsover the fence so we would not have to go over or under the fence. We would take a lantern with us and leave iton the steps so we could see our way home. Mama would always take Alice and I and we would always stay till theend. Later when Leonard was 15 or 16Mama stayed home and he started to go with us. Mama would make us dresses. Always a new one for the big dances, especially the 25th Celebrations. Lots of lace, puffy sleaves, and a sash. We would were patton leather shoes with a strap, usually flat heals. Mama would dressAlice in blue and me (Carrie) in pink. In the Winter it would be the dark blues and reds, and then in Summer itwould be the lighter shades." (Schott 1977)
The Briedens would have all kinds ofpeople staying in the house with them during the 25th Celebrations. It usually went on for several days. The family would have to kill a handful ofchickens to feed everyone.
The youngest brother, Albert, moved to Ballinger after he got married, thenhe moved back down to Atiscosa. Henrylived in San Antonio, and Fritz he lived out in Denton.
Carrie &August went to Elsie and ALfreds to meet the boys after they got out of theService - They road a train to Calif with the Baumls

Notes for CAROLINA WILHELMINA BRIEDEN:
When she was a child, friend would comedown to edge of river and yell for themto come get them. They would all go boatriding on a Sunday afternoon. They wouldtake a quilt and knock down wasp nest and then duck under the quilt. All the kids friends loved to come over andgo riding in the boat.
I was holding a calf while Mama wasmilking it's mother. I tied the ropearound my wait while I was waiting and was playing with a stalk of cornsilk. Suddenly the cow started to gointo the pen and the calf followed, dragging me through the pen. One of the Pichot cousins was loading hay sohe jumped down and over the fence and caught the calf.
I met August at a dance I wouldguess. I had seen him before atchurch. He was nice looking and dressedwell. He also played in a band at dancessometime, he played the trumpet.
My daddy died, William Brieden, after Ihad gotten married. He was horned byacow there on the place. It was rightafter I had Vivian, we were still living in Devine. Mama was over helping me when ithappened. The Bull was dehorned, butthere were still some of the horn left. It butted him up against the wooden pen. Mama did rap his chest up, but he would not go to the doctor. Everyone tried and tried, but he would notgo. He eventually got sick anddied. Aug. 4th, 1924.
Mama lived until she was 99 years old, shedied March 24, 1977. We always had apretty large family reunion to celebrate her birthday every year. They still try to have the reunion around thetime of her birthday (September 13, 1877). (Carrie Brieden Schott 1977)
The family would get together for pecanthrashing. Your Dad and the uncles wouldthrash the trees with long poles to knock the pecans down and then everyone wouldhelp pick them up. We had lots of pecanstrees at the house here and even when I was growing up, Papa planted a handfulof pecan trees down by the river.
Saturdays I would make homeadenoodles. I would have them all dried andbe cutting them to start cooking when you would come in with your Dad. Even raw with all the flour over them, youwould have to taste one. And of courseyou always found your way to the cookie jar. It was usually filled with molasses and sugar cookies ready for you toeat.

When Jimmy was old enough he would work atthe store on weekend bagging groceries and stocking shelves.
Also bought a ranch out near Devine. August would go out there frequently to workthe cattle and make sure the windmills were running properly. August bought the ranch from his dad for$20.00 an acre.
When August was a boy he would ride adonkey to get the mail when they lived in Devine.
August was a business man. Well like in the community. He went to college in 1919 and 1920 forbusiness. August joined his brothers(Willie and Joe) and formed a band and played at dances and other occasions, until Joe and Willie were inducted into the services during World War I.
