"AGNEW. This surname is of territorial origin from the Baronie d'Agneux in the Bocages of Normandy. A Marquis d'Agneux still owns portions of the ancestral fiefs, and the Chateau d'Agneux still overlooks the valley of the Vire. In 1363 the Locnaw family of the name were appointed hereditary sherrifs of Galloway by King David II and they gradually became great land-owners in the providence, holding many estates."

"AGNEW
The Agnews in Ireland, apart from a small number in Dublin, hail almost exclusively from Ulster. Seventy per cent are from Co. Antrim and a further 20 per cent from counties Armagh and Down...
The original family of d'Agneaux took their name from the Baronie d'Agneaux in Normandy. They came to England with William the Conqueror. In the twelvth century a branch of the family came to Ulster with John de Courcy and was granted the lordship of Larne, Co. Antrim.
Another branch of the family settled in Scotland and was first recorded there at about the same time. In 1363 in Wigtownshire the Lochnaw branch of this family was appointed hereditary sherrifs of the Scottish province of Galloway and became great landowners there. Coincidentally, a branch of Lochnaw Agnews came to Ulster and was granted lands near Larne by James VI of Scotland in the seventeenth century."
