books [of Lincoln Cocheu's VAN KOUWENHOVEN notebooks at the New York Public
Library] contain which numbers or letters of the alphabet.Do you have any
clues? >>
The LDS Research Outline for New York mentions a guide that might be helpful:
Sam P. Williams, Library>> (Chicago: American Library Association), 1975; FHL book 974.71 A3w)
and also an extensive 18 vol. (plus 4 supps.) Local History and Genealogy Division>> (Boston: G.K. Hall, 1974; FHL book
929.1016 N489d). I'm not sure if these would give any clue as to the
methodology used by Cocheau.
If neither of these is helpful, a person who might know something about the
Cocheau collection is Kory Meyerink, past president of the Utah Genealogical
Association, and a specialist in Eastern states genealogical research. You
can e-mail him at

Good luck.
