To my best research & findings, I think my great, great grandfather John Rusnak may have originaly spelled his name with two "s", and my Grandfather Walter Fred Rusnak started spelling it with only one? I have not been able to confirm this however most of the documentation I have for John is spelled with two s's.
I am in the Paternal Haplogroup R1a "the Metal Workers" and think we are Carpatho-Rusyns or Czecho-Slovakia (Hungarian)- Rusnak meaning "Rusyn" in Hungarian The "Rusnak" name goes back to The Carpathian Mountains which once served as the border between Poland and Hungary, also nearby Slovakia, Austria & the Ukraine.
With constant changing boundaries and being ignored by many different governments, the area was AKA - No-Mans Land of Austria-Hungary. Today this territory is known as Poland, Slovakia, & the Ukraine.
Some of the family elders are listed below, along with any known State associations. We have over 1,750 names in our Family tree & would love to return the favor & share research if possible.
