Notes for Raymond Morden Ryckman:
Notes provided by Chris Shibish, November 2001
Raymond was born on a farm near Elliot, Iowa USA.He was the 7th child and only son of John and Amanda. He was 8 when his family moved to Mexia, Texas. At age 17, he had to help his mother shoulder the responsibilities of the farm and take care of the family when his father became too ill to do it.His father died when he was 19.
When the doctor told his sister Jessie that she would have to go to Colorado for her health (she had TB), he moved his mother and 2 sisters, Jessie and Ruby to Salidia, Colorado but Jessie lived only 2 months after the move.
Raymond worked as an apprentice in a machine shop and 2 weeks after Jessie's death, they moved to Littleton because the Doctor said his mother would not live if they remained in Salidia because the altitude was too high.Raymond had had sinus operations and the Doctor told him he'd probably find relief on the west coast. So after his mother broke up the housekeeping in 1929, Raymond worked his way ton California through El Paso, Texas, parts of New Mexico and Arizona. He remained in Los Angeles until his mother's final illness in 1931.After his mother died he returned to California but could not find work and returned to Texas doing what jobs he could find until he had an opportunity to work in Houston, Texas. This is where he met his wife, Clara and they were married.
He worked for Reed Roller Bit Co. until an illness made it impossible to work.In the early part of 1950 they moved to Clara's parents' farm near Tyler, Texas so she could look after both of them. But an auto accident near Corsican prevented their continuing the trip.Raymond suffered a broken arm, leg and severe head lacerations. He died from a blood clot.He was 54.
