Notes for JOHN COLE:
Brother to Salmon:
He left home before his marriage, and after a time settled near London, Canada. He was a skilled workman at some trade, and was also a farmer part of his life. In his late years he lived on the outskirts of the town and kept a large Tavern. The only knowledge I have of him is from four letters written by him between 1828 and 1840, in which he mentions his family and gives a list of his children in their order. I quote a portion of his last letter:
"Dear Brother-----I received your letter on the third day of August dated the fifth day of July and well pleased to hear from you so soon, and well pleased to hear that you are well. Will inform you that I am not very well but so as to take care of my house and do chores. But I an not able to labor at all for I am seventy-six years this day and you cannot expect much of a man at that age. You wrote that you wanted us to come to you.I wish that we could, but it is a long way, Heber, and we must be at a great sacrifice to sell at these hard times and must leave all of our children in this distant land and never see them anymore and that would be hard. You wrote that it was too hard for me to keepTavern but if gives me a little cash every day that I should not get in any other way.I have but a small farm but it is all cleared and I value it at a hundred dollars per acre, aside from the buildings and loose property, and what I have got is my own for I owe nothing and borrow nothing and ask no favors from anybody only my maker. But if I had all of it in my pocket I think that I would go back to my native land, where we could be buried decently among by friends, for here is nothing but Old Country people and they have a way by themselves, and not Yankee ways.I live about two miles out of London Village, that is about three quarters of a mile across it both ways, and thickly settled.Back of the town is the barrack where soldiers are kept, about 1200 of them. Now you want to know the childrens names,____.Now Heber I don't know as I shall write to you anymore, but if I am able I shall write to you as long as I can write with a pen, and I want you to do the same by me.But if I fail as fast as I have lately I can't always for I go the way of the world. You wrote that you were in you fifty sixth year.I am seventy-six this day and the old lady, Hannah Cole was 68 and the 21 of Aug. last.So now it is my love to you and yourlady.

Notes for SALMON COLE:
Salmon was the third child of thirteen children.
Salmon Cole raised seven children in Londonderry, Vermont. He probably prospected around about the then western and northern country and finally settled in Canada about 1797. In 1801 he had moved to Hawksbury, Ontario, Canada, and lived in Chatham, Quebec for more than ten years previous to 1828. Three more children were born to him and Bathsheba Dodge after they went to Canada.
Between 1828 and 1832 he, with his sons, took up land in Buckingham, (Papineau County) Lower Canada, and settled there. In a letter to his brother, Heber, dated at Chatham, May 5, 1828 he says:
"Myself, four sons and two daughters, have each drawn two hundred acres of land in Buckingham, fifty miles up river. Ethan began work there last summer, and has cleared ten acres for me, twelve for Salmon, ten for Hiram, fifteen for himself, eight for Bathsheba, and fifteen for Allen Davinney, who married Lois"
Mr. Cole was a tall good looking, good tempered man and at 70 years of age was straight and active. His wife, Bathsheba Dodge, was a native of Wales, who came to this country with her parents when she was quite young. They settled in the Connecticut Valley, and she was early inured to the hardships and perils of frontier life. She was a strong tempered, energetic woman of massive frame and great Strength. She died in Buckingham at the residence of her son Oris, at the age of eighty four years.
(This comes from a book by Frank T. Cole written 1887 and covering four Cole Family Lines.)
From the "History of Prescott County" written about 1900
In the fall of 1797, Solomon Cole moved his family and household goods with carts and two yoke of oxen, from Londonderry, Vermont to Montreal and the following January came to St. Andrews, Quebec.About three years later, he settled on Lot111st Concession, in East Hawksbury; and after a residence there of about fifteen years, he moved to Chatham, and erected a house on the site of the present Presbyterian manse (house of a clergyman). Here he lived twenty years, and then moved to Buckingham, Quebec, where he died. He had a family of seven sons and three daughters. Solomon, the second son, born in 1793 engaged in farming near Cushing, in connection with which he also served the community for forty years as blacksmith. He was one of the brave defenders of his country during the war of 1812, was at the battle of Chateuguay, after which, for some time, he was stationed at York (Toronto); he was also a member of the St. Andrews Troop in the troubles of 1837.He was married to Isabella Heatie, of Chatham; they had five sons and four daughters.Mr. Cole died at Buckingham, 16th April, 1876, at the age of 87, while on a visit to his brother Oris. For some time previous to his death, he and Mrs. Cole had lived with their son, Willard.Mrs. Cole died August, 1876. Of the four children now living.Thomas is in Dakota, Mark in Iowa, Jane, the wife of D. Long, in Lansing, Mich.

Elizabeth, the wife of Geo. Crowther, lives in Montreal the three youngest are at home.
Solomon, the eldest son in 1881, entered the employ of Noxon Bros. Mfg. Co. of Ingersoll, as a commercial traveller; and was thus engaged travelling over Quebec and a part of Ontario for thirteen years. In 1893, he engaged in business in Point Fortune, where he still remains. He was married in 1892 to a daughter of John Williamson of Point Fortune.Mr. Cole is Secretary-Treasurer of the Municipality (incorporated community), also of the Methodist Church her, of which he and Mrs. Cole are active members.
