Notes for William Tubbs:
The original Tubbs ancestor in America was William, who probably came from Sutton, Isle of Ely. His parents, birth date, and place of birth are at present unknown. He appeared first in Plymouth in 1635, and shortly thereafter he went and settled in Duxbury, Massachusetts, where he was granted land several times by the court.
William's name is on a list in the Plymouth records comprised of "those now freemen, formerly servants" so it is assumed that he was in his youth, an indentured servant, which was a common practice among the Puritans, who generally sent their children to be servants for a few years at a neighbor’s home, in order for the child to learn “to serve their master.”
He became a member of the Congregational church and was thereafter admitted a freeman, or citizen, of the colony January 2, 1637/1638, which required a member to be in good standing and having a letter from his Pastor affirming his good moral character. He was admitted as freeman again in 1638 at Duxbury.
During the Pequot War, William volunteered to go on an expedition against the Indians on June 7, 1637. He was a non-commissioned officer, or private, under Captain Miles Standish, his neighbor. William Tubbs' name appears in 1643 on a list of men, aged 16 to 60, who were able to bear arms, and he was on a list of Freeman in 1646.
William Tubbs came from Sutton, Isle of Ely, Cambridge, England, but also lived in London, prior to coming to America. He arrived at Plymouth, Massachusetts and settled in Duxbury in 1635.
William Tubbs married Mercy Sprague on November 19, 1637. She came to Plymouth in July 1623 on the Ship Anne with her father, Francis Sprague, later of Duxbury. Francis Sprague was the first licensed innkeeper in America. Mercy Sprague Tubbs was the mother of all of William's children. Mercy and William were divorced July 7, 1668.
William disowned any responsibility for Mercy's bills in 1664, indicating perhaps that Mercy had left him. She is said to have left Duxbury and removed to Rhode Island, perhaps remarrying there.
William Tubbs was married, second, to Dorothy Soames, widow of William Soames of Scituate, Massachusetts. Dorothy is mentioned in William's will. There were no children, and it is assumed she was still living when he died.
He was a Surveyor of Highways between 1678 and 1685 in Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.
An original proprietor of Bridgewater, Massachusetts, William was granted land there when the town was laid out, although there doesn’t seem to be any record of his ever having lived there.
His will, dated February 2, 1677 was probated and settled on June 13, 1688. He died May 2, 1688 in Duxbury. William’s will of February 20, 1677 mentions his then-wife, Dorothy. The children mentioned in his will were Samuel, William, Bethiah, Benjamin and Joseph. It is assumed that he was about 72 when he died, thus making his birth date 1616 to 1618.
