The name "Ostendorf" derives from a locale lying to the east of the town of Dinklage.This locale today is known as "Hone".In the Middle Ages, there were a number of [not necessarily related] families who named themselves after this locale, originally with the addition of "to", e.g., "Johannes to Ostendorf' [i.e., Johannes at, or of, Ostendorg.The origin of these families was probably the two farms of Meyer and Schulte "to Ostendorf', which are today [the suburb of Dinklage-Hone.

Maria Katherina (Katie) Ostendorf married Bernard Peter Scheve on October 26, 1887 at St Alphonsus Church, Baltimore, MD. She was the daughter of Clemenz Ostendorf and Katherina Herzog and the granddaughter of Johannes Herzog and Catherine Wenzel. Who came from Kleinostheim, Bavaria, Germany, and emigrated to Baltimore in 1840.
Clemenz Ostendorf was the son of Gerhard Dietrich Ostendorf and Maria Catherina Bornhorn. The Ostendorfs came from Lohne and Dinklage, Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, Germany. Clemenz Ostendorf emigrated to Baltimore in 1849.
Bernard Peter Scheve was the son of Bernhard Anton Scheve and Angela Taphorn. The Scheves came fromVestrup and Lusche, near Vechta and the Taphorns came from Cappeln, Lankam, and Dinklage, near Cloppenburg. All in the former Duchy of Oldenburg, Germany.Bernhard Anton Scheve and Angela Taphorn emigrated to Baltimore in 1852.
