Notes for Captain John Fox: From Paulette Ownby: Member of the House of Burgesses. John Fox Jr. was born ca 1626 in England and died ca 1682 in Virginia. He was associated with other members of the family in merchant-trader operations and was the Captain John Fox who was commander of the William and John which sailed in April 1659 from England to Virginia. The restoration of the Stuarts (Charles lI) to the throne of England was celebrated in Virginia on 20 October 1660 on proclamation of the Governor. The William and John was then in port in Virginia and its commander, Capt. John Fox, participated in the occasion. "The York County Levy, October 1660, included a sum to pay Capt. Fox for six cases of drams and for 'firing his big huns (guns?).'" The family settled in Virginia, ca 1664; doubtless on the tract of l000 acres granted him by Charles II on 20 Sept. 1661. John West, Jr.: From Paulette Ownby: John West appears in Virginia 1651, as a headright in a patent issued that year to his father, indicating that he was probably returning from a trip to England. He lived on the plantation at West Point patented by his father, served as Captain, Major, and Lieutenant Colonel of militia, 1662-1673, was loyal to Governor Berkeley during Bacon's Rebellion and sat as a member of the Courts-Martial which tried the insurgents. In 1680 he was senior Justice of New Kent and served the County in the House of Burgesses, 1685. His will dated 15 November 1689 is no longer extant having been destroyed with other New Kent records. Colonel John West, only child of the Honorable John West and Ann Percy West was born at Chiskack, York River, in 1632 and the Council ot Virginia on 6 June 1632 took recognition of his birth and granted his father two thousand acres of land in honor of his son he being "the first Christian child born on the York River". It seems likely that he was sent to England for his education and returned to Virginia about 1651 at which time Governor John West made claim for land for the entry of himself, his wife Mrs. Ann West, and his son John West Jr. in the colony John West is mentioned in various records as captain in 1662, major in 1667 and lieutenant colonel in 1673. He figured prominently in Bacon's Rebellion in 1676. In 1680 he was senior presiding justice of the County Court of New Kent and Colonel commanding the militia of that county. Child of Col. West and Unity Crowshaw is:
