Robert was born in Sudbury in 1852.At this stage no registration of his birth can be found but he is recorded as being baptised.His father, Isaac, died while he was very young, as did his younger sister Ann.His mother remarried another soldier in 1858 and travelled with her new husband leaving Robert and older sister Caroline with the Amey grandparents. His stepbrothers were born in Dublin and Novia Scotia,returning to Sudbury where his youngest stepsister was born. In 1871 census at age 20, was living with his mother Mary and stepfather Michael Cahill and stepbrothers and sister.He is listed as Robert C. Cahill, Harness Maker.
He married Emma Spurgin in 1872 in Shoreditch, London.Probably moving there for work.Witnesses to their wedding were friends from Sudbury.
A year later his first son Charles James was born in Southwark.The family then returned to Sudbury where a further two children were born.William and Elizabeth.Elizabeth diedaged 10 monthsHe died in February 1878 aged 27 from TB possibly before the birth of his second daughter Elizabeth Emma.
