HESTER (ESTHER), WIFE OF MATTHIAS BRANDENBURG
by
W. J. Moore
There was a tradition in my mother's line of the Brandenburg family that the wife of Matthias Brandenburg was Hester (Esther) Vulgamore (Walgamot), daughter of Joseph Walgamot. In my research into the family at times I found that her surname was sometimes given different from that, as, for example, Volgamore, Vulgarnotte, Wolgumuth, etc.
About a dozen years ago I became associated, in a research project, with Harry S. Brandenburg of Kansas City, Missouri, whose great grandfather, Jonathan Brandenburg, was a brother of my great grandfather Joseph Brandenburg.Harry became an indefatigable researcher and among the valuable documents which he located was the will of JOSEPH WALGAMOT, father of Hester Brandenburg. This will is recorded in the office of County Court Clerk of Frederick County, Maryland, Liber A, Number 1, folio 528, and is as follows:
IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I Joseph Wolgamot of the County of Frederick and Province of Maryland being weak in Body but of sound Mind and Memory (blessed by God) do this second day of August Dommi Seventeen hundred and seventy four, make and publish this my Last Will and Testament in the manner following (that is to say) First and principally I recommend my Soul to God that gave it, and my Body to the earth to be decently buried at the Discretion of my Executors, nothing doubting but I shall receive the same again at the General Resurrection according to the mighty power of God, and as to my worldly Estate with which it has pleased God to bless me I give and bequeath it in the way and manner following.
IMPRIMIS.It is my Will and I do hereby allow that all my Estate both real and personal shall immediately after my Death be justly appraised and the sum arising from that appraisement (after all my just debts is paid and what the law allows Catherine Wolgamot my wife is taken therefrom) to be equally divided in the following manner between my sons Joseph and David Wolgamot and my Daughters Ann Chambers, Hester Brandenburg, Elizabeth Meek and Sarah Wolgamot giving each of my sons Joseph and David as aforesaid, double as much as each of my Daughters aforesaid, and should my Son David, or my Daughter or both of them, die before they are married, his/her of their part I allow to be equally divided amongst the Survivors aforesaid agreeable to the aforesaid proportion.secondly it is my Will and I do hereby allow that Ann Chambers Part shall be continued in the hands of my Executors for the use of her the said Ann Chambers . . . . . . . . . .
Hester Wolgamot was the daughter of Joseph Wolgamot who arrived in America on the Ship "Harle" out of Rotterdam, Holland September 1736.He left a will dated August 1774 in Frederick Co, MD.
Matthias was about 59 years old when he and Hester bought the land in Kentucky, which started "above the Saw Mill dam".Hester was from a sawmill family and several of Hester and Matthias' childrenlater owned or ran mills.
Hester was missing from the Clark County tax records for three years following Matthias' death: 1806, 1807, 1808.Possibly she and Matthias had been in Hardin County together and, after Matthias' death, she remained there until 1809.Her son David was taxed, as administrator, for the land on Dewits Creek from 1815 to 1822.It is likely that Hester went to, or back to, Hardin County in 1814/1815 where she may have lived with her children in turn.
She died in September 19, 1821 and was buried in Brandenburg, Kentucky, Meade County, where she had probably been living with her son, Solomon.Hester is resting on the West Hill in a marked grave with a fine stone marked "Mother of Solomon Brandenburg d. Sept 19, 1821 in her 77th year."in the Brandenburgh-Fontaine Cemetery.Near Hester's grave is the grave of Elizabeth Swan Kennedy Brandenburg, a widow who became the wife of Solomon Brandenburg.(Copied fromE.C. Brandenburgh's records June 20, 1962.) [Note: This information by Ben Brandenburg III, copied from E. C. Brandenburgh's records June 20, 1962.]
Notes for HESTER WOLGAMOT/WOHLGEMUTH:Hester Wolgamot's father arrived on Ship "Harle" Rotterdam, Holland Sept 1736.
A professional genealogist, Mrs. Russell J. (Christine) Bergen, of Martinsburg, W.VA. whose own Biography is included in this work, traveled extensively thru several counties in W. VA. and Maryland collecting court records for me.It is thru her work in and knowledge of court records that the Vulgamore family was located as an accurate knowledge of them had been preserved by the Brandenburg family historians. So painstaking was this talented researcher that she made a second trip, thru bitter cold…9 degrees below zero…to Romney, the County Seat of Hampshire Co., W.VA. to search a place she had forgotten about for a most important document I needed. She found what she knew should be there but the price was very dear; a few days later she was in the hospital with a severe heart attach.Louise Myers Young
