The firstrecorded mention of the name Selth that has been traced to date is a will of William Selthe, of the village of Wodedallying (Wood Dalling as it is known today) in the county of Norfolk, England. Many Selths appear in wills and parish registers in Wood Dalling and surrounding villages up to 1794 but none after that date. The spelling of the name changed to Selth in a will in 1535 and has been used ever since.
Nearly all the present known Selths can be traced back to another William Selth, a mariner, who married in 1744 at St Peters church in Sandwich, Kent, England. His descendants lived in Deal in the county of Kent for the next two hundred years. One of his great grandchildren, Rawden Mclean Selth, a pastry cook, emigrated to Adelaide, Australia in 1840 where many Selths now live.
