Notes for Samuel T. Shaw:
My Grandfather died at the age of 52 on December 22,1934At the time he was living at 69 Garfield Avenue. He died two years before I was born. I obtained his death certificate and it list his cause of death as Colin cancer died at McKinley Hospital (Later HeleneFuld and then Capital Health System (at Fuld)
His occupation on the death certificate indicated he was a laborer at the Trenton Board Of Education. Earlier City Directories from 1920 list his occupation as engineer.(I believe a railroad engineer)
His place of birth is listed as Roadstown, Salem,NJ(Actually Roadstown is in Hopewell Township,Cumberland County NJ) his father as Samuel T.Shaw his birth place of birth as Roadstown,NJHis mother's maiden name is not listed but her place of birth is also listed as Roadstown,NJ. An amended Certificate of death was filed on December 31 and it lists his mothers maiden name as Elizabeth Sheppard her place of birth as Roadstown, Salem,NJ.
I suspect that no one was actually sure of her first name. This being the reason for the amended certificate of death. I have not been able to locate any document listing his mothers name as being Elizabeth,I have found 1885 census records, indicating her name was Anna M. Sheppard.
I also have a copy Of Chester Shaw's death certificate (Samuels brother) and his parents are listed as Samuel T. Shaw & Anna Sheppard the person supplying this information is, Mrs Clarence Carson , who is Chester's Sister Ella who married Clarence Carson.
My Grandfathers obituarylists three surviving sisters Mrs.Clarence Carson,Mrs Henry Hasher both of Bridgeton, NJ and Mrs Richard Hogate of Salem,NJ
I Have confirmed that Mrs.Carson is his sister Ella. Mrs Hogate is his sister Ida.and Mrs Hasher is his sister Mary who first married Henry Garrison andthen Henry Hasher.
My Cousin Martha (Shaw)Harris found a marriage certificate for our grand parents indicating they were married on March 17,1906 in Bridgeton, NJ This marriage certificate was approximately 20"x12" and was rolled up it did not give the church where they were married it did give the witnesses and the person marying them. one of the witnesses was Nellie Taylor the other was Samuel ? could not make out the last name or the name of the person marrying them apparently a not a minister. The certificate was not in the best of condition. But considering it is almost a 100 years old it was not that bad either.
