Edward Theodore Flintoff (b. Abt. 1816, d. 14 Jun 1899)
Notes for Edward Theodore Flintoff:
There are different manuscripts by Isaac Batey eldest son of Martin Batey (my genealogical interest) in both the Victorian Historical Society and the Latrobe part of State Library in Melbourne. In " Pioneers of Sunbury" which is held in the Latrobe Library.
Martin Batey was at Greensborough on the River Plenty from Jan 1841 to Nov 1846 "at a place we call Brancepeth"except for a period at two other Flintoff properties. They had left Bishop Auckland in County Durham on Sep 15, 1840 and on the 25th sailed from Plymouth on the Ferguson of 555 tons with about 200 on board - crew and passengers which included Edward Theodore Flintoff, wife and child and Frederick Nevins Flintoff and child.
Martin Batey, wife, son Isaac and a 2nd son John Robson SeabornFerguson Batey was born on board on Dec 31 before the ship arrived on 15th Jan 1841.
Peter Virtue was the captain and said to be part owner. The ship was wrecked in the Torres Strait on the return trip. The Flintoff brothers purchased some land just removed from the hamlet of Greensborough.Five pounds per acre was paid, well above the government price of 12/6d per acre. Mr Batey was paid 80 or 100 pounds as working overseer for the younger brother.Wheat was selling at 15/- per bushell. The next year at 2/6."Martin Batey (probably in connection with Frederick Nevins Flintoff later purchased Red Stone Hill which he farmed and which also had a gold mine that kept a couple of the Batey sons in pocket money (near where years later Sunbury, the first
Australian rock festival was held).
There may be two Edward Theodore Flintoffs and no connection.
Carolyn said some years ago Eliza Flintoff married Dr. William Easby. Three years later, my great-grandfather was born, Charles Owen Easby. He was the only child she had.She died of septicaemia when Charles was just a baby.He was too young to remember his mother.William got married again two years later, and so Charles was raised by his father and step-mother in England.
