Age is 19 in the 1860 Census for St. Clair
Emigrated to US between 1853 and 1857 based on sibling birth dates.
Age is 38 in 1880 Census placing birth date at 1842.

July 2003A question of Emma Kay Gradwell's real maiden name
Up to now I have never been able to find LDS birth/christening records for EMMA (KAY) GRADWELL.I found and verified all of her siblings both in England using LDS records and in the States using Federal Census records.Gary Gradwell, a fellow researcher, executed a search of the LDS IGI for EMMA KAY with mother MARGARET KAY.A record exists (with no father listed) and the date is consistent with estimates of Emma's birthdate from the Federal Census records.Data looks valid. This means that Emma was probably born out of wedlock.Sampson and Margaret married almost a year after Emma was born. There is no evidence that Sampson is Emma's father. He may wellbe her Stepfather. The LDS IGI shows Margaret's father and mother as being WILLIAM KAY and MARTHA.Several possible siblings of Margaret also are documented. To confuse this even further, two other data sources tend to confirm this.1).The entry in the St. Boneface R C Church in St Clair, Schuylkill County Pa. marriage records lists the marriage of William Simmers and Emma Kay (no Gradwell) with William Gradwell (her brother) and Catharine Simmers (his mother) present. and 2).The death certificate for Thomas Gradwell lists his parents as Sampson Gradwell and Margaret Jones(was supplied by his widow).I haven't sorted this out yet but there are a number of possible scenarios.
