I am researching the Winfield Slater branch of the Slater family. His father was Benjamin (Benny) Slater of Chicago, Illinois born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1872. I have a copy of a Court Session dated March 29, 1909 stating that he is "colored" and was sent to Joliet for stealing a pocket book.
His mother was Frances Conner or Frances Klitzian, a white woman born in Detroit, Michigan in 1872. She died in 1907 or 1908.
They were married in February 1898 in Chicago.
My grandfather was sent to the Glenwood Manual Training School in 1909. This has been a great family secret for 60 years, just now coming to light. Maybe someday we'll all be on Oprah
January 2001 Update: Benjamin Slatter appears to be my great-grandfather's name. So it was spelled in the 1900 Chicago Census with his wife Francis, and my one year old grandfather Winfield. They were all listed as white at the time. It appears from the records that Benny claimed to be born in Tennessee in 1874 and Francis in Michigan in 1873. More soon.
