Notes for James Hollins:
26/04/07James Hollins
James Hollins was born in Longton, Stoke upon Trent, Staffordshire in 1856. He was the son of Eliza Ann and William Hollins, and is Pat and Mildred's great grandfather. He was one of six children they had when he first appears in the 1861 Census. This census shows the family living at 11 School Lane, Longton. The six childrens' ages ranged from 2 to 9 in this census, with James being the second youngest aged at that time..
The next census in 1871 shows that he is now aged 15, and has left school and working as a potter, as are two others of the six children Eliza aged 18 and John aged 16. His oldest brother Henry who is now aged 22, is working as a 'collier', as is their father. Their mother has died five years earlier in 1865. There are six children living at home. The youngest being William aged 9, who showed up in the 1861 Census as being aged 2. Thus there is something of a mystery, as one of the children, Mary ann who showed in the 1861 Census is no longer there. To date I've not been able to find what happened to her. The family are now living at 5 Albion Street, Longton. Living with them is Milliicent Locket aged 49 and her daughter Eliza Horn and her son Richard Horn aged 3.
In 1878 James married Caroline Shaw. They married in the parish church of Edensor in Stafford. At that time James looks to have been living at what looks like New Street. At the time of the marriage, both James and Caroline were working as potters. The marriage was witnessed by John Shaw and Sarah Elizabeth Wilson
TheCensus of 1881 finds James and Caroline Hollins living with her parents at 14 East Side Passage Limers Yard, Longton. JohnShaw is named as 'head' of the family, and is with his wife Emily and their son Henry Thomas aged 5 and his sister Sarah Ann who is only one month old. James and Caroline have a child of their own with them. This is Eliza Ann who is aged 2.
By the time of the next Census in 1891, James and Caroline have moved to 47 Barton Street, Longton. The family has grown, and there are now three children with them. Henry aged 6; Mary ann aged 4 and William who is tenmonths old.Strangely their daughter Eliza Ann is not shown.
James Hollins died in 1898. He was only aged 32 when he died.
