Gwen Williams (b. 1822, d. Nov 1858)
Notes for Gwen Williams:
26/05/07Gwen Williams (nee Evans)
This is the mother of Evan Evans. She's my great great grandmother on my mother's side. We first found her in the 1851 Census living with her parents Margaret and Evan Williams at Bryn Teg, Llantysilio, Denbighshire, North Wales. In this Census she was simply named as Gwen Evans , Daughter, Widow, aged 29 and named as a 'pauper'.Also listed were two children, John Evans aged 6 and Evan Evans aged 4,both named as 'sons' and 'scholars'. Subsequent searches and Evan's birth certificate, established that they were in fact Gwen's children. Living with the family wasCatherine Hughes, aged 19 and named as a 'house servant'. Gwen was shown to have been born in Llanderfel,Merionethshire.
I sought to find her in the 1841 Census. There's a lot of Gwen Williams, but only two, possibly three three, that fitted.I found her parents, but she was not with them, which suggests that she had left home. This assumption threw up two that fitted quite well, but not for certain. These were both Gwen Williams that were born in Merionethshirein about 1821, and were living in the area, one on her own, and the other with a family. The one living on her own was living in Corwen, which is where Gwen Williams married Edward Evans two years later. An Edward Evans that 'fits' appears in the 1841 Census. He's living in Corwen with an Ellinor Evans aged 60, who presumably is his mother.
I was able to ascertain that Gwenmarried Edward Evans on the 19th May 1843 at Corwen Parish Church. They had the two children in1845 and 1847. John in Corwen and Evan in Llantysilio. Sadly Gwen lost her husband in 1849, which helps explain why she was bacck with her parents in 1851, and perhaps also explains why she was named as a 'pauper'.
She died herself in November 1858, leaving the two boys, one aged 16 the other just 13. This starts to explain why Evan didn't show up in the 1861 Census
