| Elizabeth Bates is an enigma wrapped in a puzzle.She is reported throughout our family to be an Indian (some say a Seneca) but has a birthdate, (February 14, 1815), was educated, and a church member.She was born in New Jersey, but I can't find any record of her or her parents there.According to the family bible, she married Daniel Colie on October 24, 1834 (my perpetual calendar says there was a harvest moon on that date).Their first child, Charles Colie, was born three years later in Carroll County, Ohio, and although Carroll County began keeping records by that time, there is no record of his birth.She and Daniel moved to Washington County, PA and had seven more children, Mahlon, Theodore, Lydia, Rebecca, Frances, John and George.On April 26, 1855, Daniel Colie was murdered. On October 28, 1856, she married a young widower, James Thompson. (Again there was a harvest moon.)She had one daughter with him, Mary Bell Thompson, called Molly. James Thompson died June 30, 1860 at the age of 38. Elizabeth Bates, Colie, Thompson continued to live in West Middletown, PA and on October 16,1867 there was another harvest moon and another wedding--this time to Ephraim McBride.In the 1870's she moved to New Cumberland, W.Va and later to Toronto, Ohio.She died there on August 14, 1901.There is no record of her death except in the family bible. Was Elizabeth Bates an Indian?Who were her parents?Where were she and Daniel Colie married?Who killed Daniel?If anybody can send me some answers I will send that person a box of chocolate truffles at the next harvest moon. I am also researching the Colie Family of New Jersey and New York State, especially Jacob Colie circa 1772 and his children.And, the Fowler family of Washington County, Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio.Some of the Fowler names were Patrick, a Continental Army soldier; Sylvester, circa 1789; Smith Fowler and his children; Virginia; Simpson; Samuel; and Sylvester. | |
