Naturalized at Mayor's Court in Albany, New York - 22 November
1715.
Frederick Getman petitioned the court to become a citizen in Mayor's Court, Albany, New York, November 22, 1715 and settled in Stone Arabia, New York where many of his descendents still live.
Frederick GETMAN (at that time written KITTMAN) and Johannes BEARMAN together bought, in 1743, from Hendrick SIC, lots 92, 94, 96 and 98 of the Stone Arabia patent. Mr. GETMAN subsequently purchased BEARMAN’S interest in the property. He had four sons born here – Frederick, Jr., George, John and Christian, all of whom participated in the French war previous to 1757. Christian GETMAN was also captain of a company of Rangers in the Revolutionary war. George GETMAN succeeded his father, Frederick, in possession of the homestead. He raised five sons, all of whom served the patriot cause during the Revolution. One of them, George, Jr., held a lieutenant’s commission and was under Col. WILLETT. He inherited the old farm. His five sons were all soldiers in the war of 1812. One of them, Frederick, is now living on the homestead, where he was born eighty-six years ago, and is still active and vigorous in body and mind. He is the father of ex-sheriff Oliver GETMAN, of Ephratah village. There is yet growing on the old farm a noble maple tree, shown in the engraving of the place, from which Frederick GETMAN made sugar 160 years ago, and which has since yielded its sweets to the successive generations of the family. It is eighteen feet in circumference, and produced sixty-seven gallons of sap in the spring of 1877.
PER CLYDE GETMAN [email protected] very reliable Getman
researcher........." Frederick ( 1693) was the father of the Getmans in
Mongomery & Herkimer Counties. My theory is that his b Brother was the
"unidentified" Getman who migrated to Berks (&Bucks) counties and became
the f ather of the Getmans in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The records are
too sketchy and at this ti me too late in time, to be more than
hypothetical. There is a story, but the facts are too fu zzy to be
specific. If George was born about 1762, his father may have been a son
of "unident ified:, or Davis? may have his 'George as a son of
Susannah's father. The data I have is to o confusing. I think it is
possible that Susannah's father George was born before 1740 and ha d two
sons, George and John who were participants in the Fries Rebellion. This
needs a lot o f study before anything definite can be said.....and some
church records in Germany make it p possible for Casper to have had two
wives. I have not heard of any other Getmans who have cons idered or
explored this possibility......unquote. "

- Johann Frederick is the "founding father" of the New York State Getman lines.
- Born in Germany, emigrated to West Camp and then to Schoharie Valley, NY, where they settled at Hartman's Dorf at the approximate age of 17. He was approximately 32years of age at the time his father-in-law was issued a land patent at Burnetsfield. It is not known if he went to Burnetsfield and then to Stone Arabia, or if he went directly to Stone Arabia where he purchased land.
- Hartman's Dorf is approximately mid-way between the present villages of Schoharie and Middleburg - [N 42 deg. 37.755 - W 074 deg. 19.864]
- Settled at Ephratah in 1720 (1841 History of Fulton County - 1892 - Washington Frothingham) [this has not been confrmed WG]

... Mr Clark, the colonial secretary, under the date of May 30, 1711, informed the board of trade that the Palatines would not work at making pitch and tar, nor remain on the lands where they had been seated, on the Hudson River, but were intent on going to Schohary and settle on the lands the queen had ordered for them. In 1712 the insubordination had become so great that troops were called into the Palatine settlements to reduce the people to order. But Gov. Hunter failed in compelling an entire submission to his will, for in the fall of that year some of their leading men were sent to the Indians on the Schoharie creek to crave permission to settle among them, and this being granted, a Palatine migration to the Schoharie valley took place in the winter of 1712-13, comprising some forty or fifty families. Others followed, no doubt soon after. (A History of Herkimer County, Nathaniel S. Benton, J. Munsell, 78 State Street, Albany, NY, 1856 - pg. 36)
---
Due to mismanagement and unrealistic expectations for the production of pitch, Palatimes were insufficently supplied with goods, food and similar supplies. In October of 1712 fifty families moved to Schoharie where they had made arrangements with the indians. Others followed in March of 1713. Seven dorfs (villages) were established during 1713.

The First Getman Family in Tryon County.-John Frederick Getman came from Germany to this colony about the year 1730). His wife was a daughter of Johannes Bierman, but where he married her is unknown. He at first secured 300 acres of land in the Stone Arabia patent, in the present town of Ephratah, and in three other purchases he added 400 acres more, giving him 700 acres in a body. (Frontiersmen of New York pg. 436-437 - Jeptha R Simms, Albany, NY 1883)

"Legend claims that in 1732 the Village of Ephratah was named by Anthony Beck after a place in the Bible meaning fruitful abundance. It is said that Mr Beck had the power of foreseeing the future and one day while standing on Spook Hill, east of Ephratah, he envisioned a thriving city with railroads and smoking engines, even though they had not yet been invented."
