The 1733 Moseley map of North Carolina shows the Hand family residing on the south bank of the Neuse River, across from the mouth of Swift Creek.The map, like a number of other documents, mispelled the name as "Handy."Peter Hand was one of the earliest settlers in Craven County.In 1719, he owned fifty acres and had one tithable.Sometime after April 29, 1719, he married Elizabeth Collier, daughter of Joseph Collier.She died by 30 July, 1724, and her inheritance of 640 acres was passed on to her husband by escheat patent. This type of patent, plus her father's will that the land pass to her heirs, indicate that Elizabeth Collier died with out children to inherit the land.
Peter Hand married second Ann Dept, daughter of his neighbors John and Penelope Depit Sr.John Deipt lived in Craven County as early as Jan. 17, 1714/15, when he bought 200 acres on the west side of Brice's Creek.John and Penelope Deipt had at least five children: Ann Dept, who married first Peter Hand, Sr., and second Edward Bryan; Peter Dept; John Dept, Jr.; Jane Dept; and Elizabeth Dept. One daughter probably married David Dunn. John Deipt, Sr. died between Jan. 17, 1723/24 and June 17, 1724. Penelope Dept died between March 2S-, 1732 and Aug. 27, 1735.

1. Elizabeth Hand (d. 1769), who married Arthur Blackman, Sr. ;
2. Mary Hand, who married first by 1747 William Bush, and married second Thomas Castellaw ;
3. Jane/Jean Hand
4. Peter Hand, Jr. not named in the will of his father,(b. ca 1731 d. unmarried by Oct. 26, 1769). Peter Hand, Jr. served in the Craven County militia in 1754.
