Born in Sandy Run, Orangburgh District, SC, George Hoover, 1777-1856, and his family came to Alabama with his father in law and Tory John George Zeigler, 1755-1830, around 1816-17. George Hoover, known as Bama Spigener and first Spigener immigrant to Alabama, and his wife Jane Elizabeth Zeigler are buried in historic Zeigler Cemetery, Coosada, Elmore County, AL, along with at least 40 of their kin. George Hoover's tombstone, among the oldest, is the most prominent in Zeigler Cemetery. The close and loving relationships between the Spigners and the Zeiglers are best exemplified by the six marriages between the families. The Zeiglers, notably, also married among themselves. |
