Notes for BALZER V. ZMUDA TRZEBIATOWSKI:
Information was obtained from a German genealogist, Herbert von Schmude in 1937. He tells the story, and I quote; " This is an old noble family from the former Prussian province of Pomorskie. ( today Poland)
Balzer Zmuda was officially confirmed, in the city of Stettin (today Szcecin) on 1/9/1515by Duke Bogyslaw X of Pomerania to be a land owner in the village of Trzebiatkow in the county of Butow. The name appears here first as well as the village of Zemmen (today Ciemno) but from different branches of the family. The branch of the family in question begins with Mathias von Zmuda-Trzebiatowski born around 1736 and 1747 in the village of Trzebiatkow"
In 1937 Herbert v. Schmude founded a genealogical society for the von Schmude family.
With the help of Stefan Hartmann from Berlin, who is a direct line of Mathias's 4th son Paul Ernst, the works of Herbert v. Schmude can be found at the "Preussisch Secret State-Archiv" in Berlin. Stefan at [email protected] has helped me find the missing links from Balzer v Schmude to Mathias v. Zmuda Trzebiatowski. I am using the name Zmuda hence forth because it is the Polish version.
Our history begins with Balzer v. Zmuda Trzebiatowski who was bestowed land 1515in the village of Trzebiatkow J. According to Stefan Hartmann the area of land was divided into sections from A to Q, and the I is sometimes spelled J. During this time, 1515, the King of Poland was Zygmunt 1 Stary. During his reign, 1506 - 1548 it was still the Jagiellon Dynasty. King Zygmunt was honored for his courage in the battle of Wisuiowierz against the Tarters. He was a Swede from the ruling house of Vasa.
Herbert v. Schmude also offered a picture of our Zmuda Coat of Arms which was difficult to find the meaning. With the help of Stefan Hartmann it was clarified to mean "quote" The 2 triangle star on the shield represents the Germanic symbol of the goddess " Freja".Freja was an old Germanic, Norse goddess of love and fertility. She was also known as the "beloved Goddess of Warriors" whichmeant to the people of the time, that the family is fruitful with lots of children and descendants and the men would be protected in battle. On the crest is a Dove sitting atop a crown, representing pureness, peace, and partner faithfullness. These people had a famous phrase; "Your blood, your highest property"
Add on notes from, http://strony.wp.pl/wp/trzebiatowskie/azjazdl.htm "1st. convention of the Trzebiatowski family, quote from Jerzy Zmuda-Trzebiatowski "In 1515 Duke Bogislaw X awarded six warriors: Sienion Gendrecka, Balzer Smuda, Gregor Mlotek, Siemion Recka, Albrecht Pancke, & Greg Chammer with the village of Trebbetkauw and the surrounded land."
Special Thanks to Contribitors; Mary Doerr, Stefan Hartmann, Peter Lipinsky, Adeline Sopa, Herbert v. Schmude, who with out their help this work could not have been completed!
AND SO IT BEGINS, WITH BA;ZER v. ZMUDA TRZEBIATOWSKI 1515 AD.
