Max began farming with his father after his military duties ended in 1930 and when he married on Nov. 28, 1931 he took over his fathers half of the farm at which time his father retired. In approximately April 1932 he received the other half of the farm that up to this time his sister Frieda and her husband Adolf were
operating, at this time Frieda and Adolf moved to a farm of their own.
In January 1945 the family fled to the west as the Russian Army was advancing
and they lost the farm and everything they owned except a few things that they were able to cart along on the wagon with which they fled.
After the war they lived in Varel and at first worked in a vegetable drying and processing plant from Oct. 29, 1945 to June 10, 1949 until the ground blockade to Berlin was lifted and there was no need any longer for the lightweight dried vegetables for the airlifts to Berlin. After this He was jobless for about two years and then received work in a coal delivery business on June 11, 1951 to April 10, 1954 when the family emigrated to Canada. They arrived in Halifax on April 28, 1954 and arrived by rail in Winnipeg on May 1, 1954 where he worked in the housing construction industry until He purchased a farm in Anola Manitoba Feb. 1, 1960.
