The Steeles of Waterhead
The Steeles of WaterheadUpdated May 28, 2002
I am researching the family of John Steel of Waterhead, Lesmahagow, a leading figure in the Covenantors of Lanarkshire. He survived the "Killing Times" and rebuilt Waterhead in 1709. He had at least 2 sons and a daughter,Isabella who died in 1774. John Steel's father, William, was killed at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge (1679), following which John and his cousin David were outlawed. David was shot at Skellyhill (1686). I would be grateful for any information concerning the children of John Steel and his wife, Marion Lean. I have traced my tree back to John Steel who married Helen Paterson c.1711. This could be a son or grandson of John Steel, the Covenantor.
