Notes for John Meador:
(Source: County of Anson North Carolina: Pub. 1995 by Don Mills, Inc. and the Anson County Heritage Book Committee, p 248, and Janeva Bailey.)
Janeva:"... in the Parish of Farnham of Rappahannock County, Virginia, in the late 1600's and early 1700's, John Meadors (1659-1721) was a good citizen and family man.It is here he spent his days raising a new family, tending his tobacco crop, serving on juries, and doing other tasks as required by the Administrator of the Colony."
Marilyn Ramey < [email protected]> writing to the Meador rootsweb site, 18 Dec 1999, notes:
"John Meador ca 1658-59died aft Oct 17,1721First wife unknown Second wife Elizabeth White"
But, seeJean Suddarth <[email protected]>, 18 Dec 99 on the Meador rootsweb page, who notes, citing her own work and that of Victor Meador:
"No one knows who the second wife of John Meador was.... The Aubrey connection is actually through Sarah, John's mother. Henry Awbrey was her second husband. This is pretty well substantiated through the will of Richard Awbrey, son of Sarah and Henry. It is dated Apr 18, 1697, Old Rappahannock, a short description of the pertinent parts should help:In it, he leaves Elizabeth Evans, his God daughter a heiffer. To my brother, John Meador, all my wearing cloaths that's made up, My sister Maguire a ring of twelve shillings price, Phillip Maguire as much mixt kersey now in the house as will make him a coate......
Victor Meador says John Meador's father was Thomas Meades, son of Thomas Meades who died in 1656 in Lancaster Co. (Virginia).I personally have my doubts but it's up to you to decide for yourselves. He does go into the Ambrose Meador line in the book, but as he states, they lived less than two miles apart and there is considerable participation of Ambrose in Thomas' affairs but nothing which points to what, if any, relationship there was.
Elizabeth White 1st wife of John Meador was the daughter of Richard White and Addra. They had a son but he was killed by Indians. On Feb 4, 1677/78 Richard White deeds his plantation and personal and real property to John Meador. By that time, Richard White has remarried; his second wife was Mary...."
John's will was created on October 17, 1721 and presented for probate on Nov. 21, 1721 according to Essex Co. Will Book 3, p. 284.
Notes for Ann Aubrey: There is a lot of discussion about this marriage as well as others! Jean Suddarth<[email protected]>very helpfully explainson the Rootsweb Board in December 1999: "I have a copy of the book and I have also done some research on it myself. I have found a few things which Victor wasn't able to but he did a great job. 'First.... No one knows who the second wife of John Meador was. If there is anyone, please come forward. The Aubrey connection is actually through Sarah, John's mother. Henry Awbrey was her second husband. This is pretty well substantiated through the will of Richard Awbrey, son of Sarah and Henry. It is dated Apr 18, 1697, Old Rappahannock--a short description of the pertinent parts should help. In it, he leaves Elizabeth Evans, his God-daughter a heiffer. To my brother, John Meador, all my wearing cloaths that's made up, My sister Maguire a ring of twelve shillings price, Phillip Maguire as much mixt kersey now in the house as will make him a coate......Victor wasn't able to find additional information on Susannah McGuire (Maguire) but I did. Her first husband was John Evans and the Elizabeth Evans (god daughter of Richard Awbrey) was their daughter. Susannah was John Meador's sister. John Evans and Susanna had some children but he died and she married Phillip Maguire-they had a son named Phillip. I couldn't find any more records on Phillip and son Phillip but I did find her will and information on John Evans. "Victor Meador says John Meador's father was Thomas Meades, son of Thomas Meades who died in 1656 in Lancaster Co. I personally have my doubts but it's up to you to decide for yourselves. By that time, Richard White has remarried; his second wife was Mary.Hope this has helped.Jean" Patrick Cuff <[email protected]>, 11 May, 2001, says on the Meador Forum that "The Dorothy Meador you speak of is my 8th great aunt.I have no information about her except her birthdate, 1656. The following are the Awbreys/Aubreys in my file and their relationship to me:Ann Aubrey 1678-Oct. 17,1721 Essex Co., VA, 2nd wife of John Meador Sr. 1659 to November 21, 1721 Essex Co., VA.married Dec. 16. 1694.She is my 8th greatgrandmother. She is the above Dorothy's sister-in-law. Henry Awbrey, 2nd husband of Sarah Hoskins 1637-1682, widow of Thomas Meador Jr.1635 - Apr 1662.Henry and Sarah were married about 1662.I show no children for Sarah and Henry. He was my 9th great step grandfather. He was Dorothy's step father.I will search my Meador books and see what else I can find on the Awbreys/Aubreys." And.... "I just found in my copy of "Our Meador Families in Colonial America" by Victor P. Meador and Bernal M. Meador (1986), page 39.It states "When Richard Awbrey (the one the first email was about) made his will, which was probated October 11, 1697, he named John Meador as 'brother.'Considerable speculation has arisen about the exact nature of this relationship. Some have said that John Meador (for his second wife) could have married a daughter of Henry Awbrey and thus a sister to Richard. No such daughter of Henry Awbrey has been documented.Another speculation has been that Richard's wife, Dorothy was a sister of John Meador.Nor has such a sister been found. In actuality, Richard's wife was Dorothy North, daughter of Augustine North. Sources given: For will (Essex Co. Deeds, etc. No. 9, p. 127) For Richard's wife as Dorothy North ("Winstons of Virginia") by Clayton Torrence, p. 174) I hope this helps. It shows and documents that the ancestor was not a Dorothy Meador but a Dorothy North, daughter of Augustine and Dorothy North." |
