John H. Conlee (son of Isaac Conlee and Mary Kennedy)465, 466, 467, 468, 469, 470, 471, 472, 473, 474 was born March 21, 1771 in New Jersey475, 476, 477, 478, 479, and died 1816 in Madison Cnty, IL480, 481, 482, 483, 484.He married Hester Hodson on Abt. 1791 in Rockingham Co., N.C.485, 486, 487, 488, 489. Notes for John H. Conlee: [mightyfamily_IsaacConlee.FTW] Parents:John is at the head of the list from the Conlee family Bible that was shown to be children of Isaac and Mary Conlee. The migration pattern from NC to TN to KY shown in contemporary government records that match his parents, provided further affirmation. The assumption that the parents of John, James, a daughter and Reuben were Alexander and Rexie Conlee, is no longer supported by most researchers. This confusion originated with the story told by John H. Conlee, son of Alexander, son of John, son of Isaac, as recorded in The Family Records of the Bell-Conlee Families bye Lucille Bell Walker, 1973, p. 4 (LDS film #1033692, Item #1).Isaac died in 1836 and John H. was born in 1817.Walker also tells of a visit when John was about 16 with his mother to her parents (p. 9).His mother, Rebecca Weddle's parents were George Weddle and Mary Evans.the great-grandparents were George & Mary Weddle and Richard and Mary Evans. We do not know the names of the parents of one grandmother Hessy Hodson. In this where the great-grandparents, Alexander and Rexie and the stories associated with them fit?The first born of John and Hessy is the confirmed Alexander Conlee. Birth:The date, 21 Mar 1771, is from the Conlee Family Bible.A History of Kentucky Baptists, 1880, p. 113, states:"He is supposed to have been a native of New Jersey, but was raised in South Carolina."The family has never been found in SC.The NJ birth has been picked up and used. There is no legal record of Isaac Conlee in NC until he purchased land in 1783.So though no legal records of the family in NJ have been found, the NJ birthplace does not conflict with verifiable data. First Marriage:The date and place of their marriage are listed documentation for her name: Hessa Hodson.Juanita Conlee sent a photocopy of, The Membership List of Primitive Baptist Church of Illinois. It has: "Conlee, Hessa - Canteen Creek - Troy (Madison Co, IL) - MO (Missouri Association."In the 1850 Census, rather strangely, she is listed as "Hesakia".In the records of her second marriage to Richard Wood she is "Hessy".The Sulphur Springs Cemetery Records, and the list of charter members in the article on the "South Fork of Mauvaistera" Primitive Babtist Church, both have "Hessa Wood".These variations in the first name pose little problem. Residences:According to the birth records of his children, the family moved from Rockingham Co., NC, where Alexander was born in 1792, to near Navita, Greene Co., TN, in 1793 or 1794, where Isaac was born in 1795. We saw in the 1797 court records of Greene Co., TN, John Conley, along with Isaac and Daniel, were appointed to work on the county road from Blue Spring to Lick Creek.Sally, Mary and Priscilla were all born there in Greene Co., TN, as well as Josiah in 1803.On 30 Dec 1803 John Conlee sold 100 acres of land on Lick Creek in Greene Co., TN, to Fredrick Shaffer. This deed was proved in the July Session, 1805 and recorded 17 Sept 1806.This sale prepared for his move to KY.On May 20, 1805, John Conley filed entry for 40 acres according to Joe Brady. He was definitely there by 1805.Though Rachel may have been born in Barren Co. in 1805, the rest of the children are listed as born in Warren Co., KY in 1815 and "Leaving Warren County Kentucky, John and Hester Conlee traveled with their ten children and several other families to Illinois."His son, Josiah Conlee, dictated his life story when 84 years old with dates only slightly different. Death: John died (1816) after they reached Ridge Prairie, Madison Co., was buried near Edwardson. Ministry:It is stated that "Mr. Conlee was ordained minister in both Presbyterian and Baptist churches." Walker in the Bell-Conlee paper says, "They moved to Tennessee, where according to tradition, he was a Presbyterian minister. While living in Tennessee, he was converted to the Baptist faith and joined the Baptist church."To quote from Spencer's, History of Kentucky Babtist: "From thence he moved to Barren County, Kentucky, and untied with old Mount Tabor Babtist church. Here he was ordained to the ministry, by Reverend Zacharia Emerson, and Reverend Robert Stockton in April 1811.He was for a short time pastor of a church on Alexander's creed, in Warren Co."On 20 May 1811, the Barren Co., court record reads, "On the motion of John Conley who produced credentials of his ordination and his being in regular communion with the Babtist church, took the necessary oath and entered into bond agreeable to law with Benjamin Buster is security therefore license granted to him to celebrate rites of marriage."At this time bonds were not issued for marriages, but the ministers who performed the ceremonies were to file reports of the marriages they had performed every year or so.John Conoly reported six marriages that he performed, during 1811 and 1812 in Barren Co.Heading the list is his son, Alexander Conlee and Rebcy Wendell, married September 22, 1811.The Pioneer Babtist Church Records of South-Central KY...1799-1899, has an article, p. 331, "History of Beaver Dam Baptist Church, Edmond Co., KY" stating, "Sometime after April 1811, John Conlee was chosen pastor and continued until 1815." Children:These are supplied from the Josiah Conlee Family Bible. The one problem with this list is it has been transcribed is that there is an omission.Betsy Conlee's birth that is listed is that of Jane, and Jane is omitted. We do have a record of Jane's marriage and know of her another old list that mistakenly goes back to a "Revolutionary Soldier".
