Said to have been employed as a groom or coachman in Louisa county, Virginia, who eloped with the young daughter of his employer, who was thereafter disinherited.
Notes for SIDNEY LYDIA "LIDDY" JONES:
SYDNEY JONES PAYNE--Said to be the headstrong daughter of a wealthy Louisa Co. plantation family, who eloped with a groom or coachman and was consequently disinherited (Iris Regina Bare Thompson, personal communication). Her marriage to Thomas C. Payne is recorded in the records of Orange Co., VA, in 1825;permission was given by her guardian, Fielding Jones of Spotsylvania Co.Her parents have not yet been identified;nor has her precise relationship to Fielding Jones been ascertained. She appears in the Rockingham Co. Census for 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 (the only ones examined). Some information on her appears in the obituary of her son, Horace Payne:
HARRISONBURG [1924]--Rockingham's only centenarian and one of the oldest residents of Virginia, Horace Payne, aged 105 years, was laid to rest at Singers Glen, in the county where his entire life was spent.Payne died at the home of a niece.Spending his last years in a rather out-of-the-way part of the county and living a secluded life, few persons aside from those in the immediate neighborhood knew of the very remarkable man.Records produced by relatives, however, show that Payne was born in 1819 [what were those records, one wonders?].For many years, Payne and his mother conducted a tavern near the foot of the Alleghany Mountains on one of the leading routes to the West.Later, he turned to farming and tilled the soil until advanced age forced him to give it up.Payne's mother, married when she was 15 years of age, came to Rockingham from East Virginia. She lived to be nearly 100 years old.Of the family of twelve children, two now survive. They are, Mrs. John Wenger, of Dayton, and Henry Payne, of Waynesboro.

Payne and Sidney Jones;probably not their eldest child, in fact.Found in the Census for 1850 and 1880--they agree that he was born about 1832 and lived to be 91 or 92, contrary to his obituary (see below). The 1850 Census calls him "Hiram."Both Censuses place him in the household of Thomas & Sidney Payne;both indicate that he was Deaf/Dumb and illiterate;the 1880 Census also describes him as "idiotic."A clipping of Horace's obituary was provided to Kevin A. Thompson by Crystal Margaret "Peggy" Payne Purdy: HARRISONBURG [1924]--Rockingham's only centenarian and one of the oldest residents of Virginia, Horace Payne, aged 105 years, was laid to rest at Singers Glen, in the county where his entire life was spent.Payne died at the home of a niece.Spending his last years in a rather out-of-the-way part of the county and living a secluded life, few persons aside from those in the immediate neighborhood knew of the very remarkable man.Records produced by relatives, however, show that Payne was born in 1819 [what were those records, one wonders?].For many years, Payne and his mother conducted a tavern near the foot of the Alleghany Mountains on one of the leading routes to the West.Later, he turned to farming and tilled the soil until advanced age forced him to give it up.Payne's mother, married when she was 15 years of age, came to Rockingham from East Virginia. She lived to be nearly 100 years old.Of the family of twelve children, two now survive. They are, Mrs. John Wenger, of Dayton, and Henry Payne, of Waynesboro. |
