Des Tily and I have been researching the Tily family in New Zealand, Australia and England, for many years.
All the past & present members of the Tily family in New Zealand, are descendants of Thomas Tily, who emigrated to New Zealand in 1862/63 (exact date unkown).
Our tree starts with the marriage of John Tily to Mary Plowman on the 17th of March 1772, at Farnham, Surrey, England.
(Thomas Tily, was a grandson of John and Mary).
Thomas emigrated from England to Australia, with his first wife Fanny, on the ship "Hope" arriving at Australia in January 1854.
From this marriage, three children were born in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia.....Sadly Fanny died in 1858, four years after arriving in Australia.
Thomas later married Euphemia in 1860, at Hobart. The first two children to this second marriage, were born in Australia.
Thomas emigrated from Australia to New Zealand, on his own.... later followed by his second wife Euphemia and their children.
However we have not been able to establish the exact date of arrival in NZ, nor which ship he came on. This was during the gold rush period and at this time imigration records were abandoned.
According to membership records at the Early Settlers Museum of Dunedin , he came on the ship "Derwent Water" in 1861, but his name is not on any passenger lists.
We do know that Thomas and Euphemia's were in New Zealand from 1863 (or earlier), because their third child was born in New Zealand, on the 17th of July 1863.
Thomas is buried with his second wife Euphemia and some of their children, at the Dunedin southern cemetery, New Zealand.
The last reunion of the New Zealand members of the family, was held on the 16th of January 1987, at the Portobello domain, near Dunedin. We have this reunion recorded on a video.
Portobello is where Tily street is located. Tily street, opposite the Portobello school, was named after Thomas Tily. Thomas was one of the first teachers at the school and taught there for many years.
Some members of the New Zealand family have visited Farnham in recent years, where Thomas Tily was born.
The Tily family owned several business's and houses in Farnham. One business and several houses are located in Castle street. Most of these buildings are still in use today.
At the bottom of this page you will find links to our family tree, some photo's and a link to the town of Farnham web site. On the Farnham web site you can find pictures of the town (look for Castle st, where Tily homes and shop still stand and are used today) and details and photo's of the castle at the top of the street.
If you have an interest in our family tree, please contact me.
The oldest record of a "Tily" that I have come across so far, is the burial of Gregory Tily on the 10th of September 1613 at St Mary, Iwerne Courtney, Dorest, England.
I have also been told that the Tily name was once traced back to the 14th century...but do not have any of these details. The trace stopped at this point, due to records being destroyed in a church fire.
Ed Tily (England) and his father Gordon, have traced their branch of the Tily family back to 1315, around the Chipping Sodbury area of England, but we have not yet been able to tie our families together. There are still Tily's living there now and the mayor (2009) was a Mr Paul Tily.
There seems to be approx five different Tily family groups in England.
