They had 16 children.William Underwood's name first appeared on a federal census in 1850, for Itawamba County, Mississippi, with his wife Nancy listed as well. They were listed as family #434, on page 409.
William and Nancy were next listed on the 1860 US census for Lauderdale County, Alabama, on pages 55 & 56.

The identity of the father of William M. Underwood has not yet been documented, but I suspect that it was a Joshua Underwood. Next to the family of William M. Underwood on the 1850 census for Itawamba County, Mississippi was a Joshua Underwood from Virginia. He was born in about 1786 (and died August 1871 in Franklin Co., AL.) Since William M. Underwood was born in Elbert County, Georgia, I checked the census records for Elbert County, Georgia. There was a Joshua Underwood listed as head of household on the federal census records for 1820, 1830 and 1840. The father of this Joshua Underwood was also named Joshua Underwood (born 1746 in VA), and his grandfather was Nathan Underwood (born about 1707 in VA.) The results of extensive research of this Underwood family are published by McDowell Publications of Utica, Kentucky, in a book by Ben H. Coke, "The Underwood Family from Madison County, Virginia."
