Notes for Davis Vail:
Davis (5) Vail moved to Morristown at the age of 27, (1783) having previously lived at Pigeon Hill and "On the Plains."Later he removed to Littleton where he and his wife ended their lives. He became a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Morristown, but later united with the 1st Baptist Church of Littleton, N. J. and from there was transferred to the Morristown Baptist Church of which he was Trustee in 1800.As Trustee he was party to the sale of church property directly opposite the Morristown Court House. (v. Morris Deeds Book C:628).
At the age of 26 (1782), he purchased from his father, Thomas (4) Vail, 70 acres of land in Morris Co., N. J., "on the road from Captain Loseys to Boonton; all on the South side of Denn Brook." opposite to another lot owned by his father.
In conjunction with his farming and business interests, he was called to various offices of trust and honour in the Township and County.He was made Coroner in Morris County and held this office during 1797-'98, 1800. (v. Comm. Bk. AB:70, Trenton, N. J.).He was elected one of the Chosen Freeholders of Morris County, as related by the "Genius of Liberty," pub. 8 May, 1806.He was reelected to this office in 1807, 1808, 1810, '12, '13 (v. Gen. of Lib. for 7 May, 1807; 28 April, 1808; v. Morristown Palladium for 24 April, 1810, 14 May, 1812, 29 April, 1813.)
Davis (5) Vail was chosen one of the Town Committee of Morristown for 1807, and also served as such during 1808 (v. Gen. of Lib'y, as above).He was nominated for the General Assembly of New Jersey, as shown by the Gen. of Lib'y for 10 September, 1807.He was elected one of the Commissioners of Appeals for Hanover T'w'p, Morris Co. in 1811. (v. Pallad. 13 April, 1811 ).
During the years 1812-15 he sold real estate to Charles (6) Vail, his son, to John (5) Vail, his brother, and to Thomas (4) Vail, his father. (v. Morris Deeds, C2:253 and B2:453).Also Davis and Hannah Vail sell to Daniel Tingley in 1814. (loc. cit. A2:176).Davis sold "Land and a grist mill" in Morristown to Stephen (6) Vail, his son, (loc. cit. W:166).From the above recital it is evident that he acquired considerable real estate.
The popularity of Davis Vail may be measured by the flattering vote which elected him Coroner, -- he receiving from all the Townships of Morris County 645 votes, October, 1797, being the highest in a list of 9 candidates by almost 100 votes. (v. Morris Co. Gaz. 1:22).In 1798 he was reelected by a total of 761 votes; in '99 by a total of 471 votes, while for 1800 his total vote for reelection was 889 ballots. (v. Gen. of Lib'y for these years).
Having had an active career for his day he died intestate in his 60th year on the 13 November, 1816. The Petition for the division of his real estate (1819) names his eight surviving children: Stephen, Lewis, Charles, Eunice Johnson, Julia F. Vail, Eliza, Hetty, and William Penn Vail. (v.
