Dudley was named after his grandmother, Wilmouth Dudley. There is
some debate on the birthplace of Dudley. His father William had land
in the Spartanburg, South Carolina area. Many belive that Dudley was
born while his father was serving in the Militia in Floyd County,
Georgia.
After his marriage in South Carolina, Dudley lived for a time in
Davidson County, Tennessee. In deed book P, pages 539-541 of
Spartanburg County, South Carolina states the following:
"Feb. 5, 1805 Dudley Brannon (heir of William Brannon desc) Davison
CO, TN to Cyrus Seay carpenter (Spartanburgh) for $70 sold 40 acres on
Lawsons Fork: border Edward Bollinger, Cyrus Seay, and Thomas Brannon
Part of the grant to Samuel Seay and admeasured numbered 4 by Isham
Foster, William Foster, Rowland Johnson, Gabrial Benson, and Peter
Gray commissioners appointed by Spartanburgh common pleas court to
divide estate of William Brannon desc. Witness Abner Benson, Jacob
Utley and Robert Benson. Signed Dudley Brannon Feb. 5, 1805"
Dubley moved the Christian County, Kentucky around 1805 where he owned
90 acres of land. Dudley purchased another 80 acres in Christian
County, Kentucky on March 21, 1820. He moved to Morgan County,
Illinois around 1824. Dudley, his wife and family are listed in the
1830 Morgan County Census. His son William Brannan was living nearby.
He moved to Northern Greene County, Illinois in 1833 near Barrow. He
purchased 40 acres is Greene County for $1.25 an acre as part of the
federal land purchase program on January 26, 1833. The section
purchased was Section 15, TN 11, RW 11. His sons William, Enoch,
James and John all purchased land in Greene County in the 1830s very
near Dudley. This land was purchased from the Federal Goverment.
Thus Dudley was the original owner of these lands. They would have
been in their natural state and he would have had to develop the land
into a farm. Also note that at this time period, there were still a
few Native American Indians living in this area.
The Brannan's were closely tied to the family of Samuel Jones. Samuel
was a revolutionary war soldier from Dinwiddie County, Virginia. The
Brannan's and the Jones families lived near each other in Christian
County, Kentucky and moved to Morgan County, Illinois together in the
late 1820s. Dudley's daughter Rachel married William Jones in
Christian County. Sarah Brannan married Daniel R. Jones in Morgan
County. Enoch Brannan married Mary Polly Jones in Greene County,
Illinois. Members of two other Christian County, Kentucky families
came with Dudley from Kentucky. The Bobbits and McKinneys were living
near Dudley in the 1830 Morgan County, Census.
a message from a Brannan cousin:
In working on my Brannan(Brannon)/Jones lines in Morgan Co., IL and Christian Co.,KY in the last few months, I kept running into the Bobbitt family members as peripheral relations to my direct Jones line...and as a consequence, have read extensive excerpts from "the Bobbitt book" on the web. Just recently, I came into possession of information that proved that my ggggreat-grandfather, Dudley Brannan came from Spartanburg Co., SC. As I read through excerpts from Dudley's father, William Brannon's estate records, and some related deed records, I came across the following two items:
1) 1804- Sptbg.Co. Deed Book K; pp. 225-226 24 Oct; John Bobbett(Christian Co., KY) to Reuben Seay...border Thomas Brannon and Reuben Seay...signed John Bobbett and Esther
2) 1832 - Sptbg. Co. Real Estate Settlement File #17 of William Brannon " To Edmond L. Bishop and wife, Thomas Brannon, Dudley Brannon, John Keenum and wife, John Bobbitt and wife, James Brannon, John Brannon, William Brannon, John ? and wife, Samuel Seay and wife, ? Seay, Dudley Seay, and William Seay heirs of Elizabeth Seay...all heirs and distributees of William Brannon, deceased...real estate of William Brannon., deceased, situated on Lawson fork, bounded by Presley Ballenger, David Golightly and Willamson Seay...
This would seem strong proof that John W Bobbitt, Sr. is married 1st to Esther Brannon (sister of my Dudley) not "Hester Boney" as I have seen mentioned (though obviously there is a similarity in these two names. Does anyone know what the source of the "Hester Boney" name is??
As this information now appears to tie my Brannan line into the Bobbitts, I am curious, and would like to have a list of Esther & John's descendants, etc. I am also more interested in this Bobbitt line, because I hve no proved marriage for my Dudley-I only know(and that is from an account in a county history) that he was married to a Mary(Polly)...I assume he was married in SC, as his daughter Rachel was born there in 1801, according to the 1850 census. Dudley was born 1770-1780...another deed dated 5 Feb 1805 says that he was in Davison(Davidson?) Co., TN. I am in the process of trying to establish a definate date for his arrival in Christian Co., KY, but it is before 1810. As marriage records for SC are virtually non-existant for his time , I feel as though I am searching for a needle in a haystack.Maybe if Dudley's sister married a Bobbitt, so did he...do any of you researchers have a Bobbitt daughter b.1770-1780, perhaps named Mary(Polly), who might have married Dudley Brannan/Brannon in SC @1778-1779?
