Notes for Richard Walsh:
Information that came from Bernadine Walsh (nee Barry) indicated that Richard Walsh was born in Ireland in 1794 and came to Canada with the Captain Peter Robinson settlers around 1825. The ship he arrived on was the John Barry. However, information in the 1871 Canadian Census indicates he may have been born in Canada about 1811. The census lists a Richard Walsh in Asphodel who's age was 60. He settled in the Peterborough, Ontario area. Most of the people who took passage with Captain Robinson were trying to escape the great potato famine that racked Ireland at that time.
Bernadine Walsh's information may have been correct because there is a Richard Walsh listed as a passanger on the John Barry and his age is given as 33 which would make his year of birth around 1792. The following is an excerpt from the passanger list of the John Barry:
Origin: Inniscarra, Cork
Location: W lot 11, con 6, Asphodel Twp
Richard was a soldier in the rebellion of 1837-1838 and was married with a family of 10 children. He was a Militia man in 1840 and, like other soldiers, contributed a day's pay to the rebuilding of Brock's Memorial at Queenston Heights. For having served in the army he was given a grant of land in Asphodel Township (near Peterborough), Lot 11, Concession 6.One daughter, Kate, later married Cornelius Sweet who was a carriage maker and a blacksmith. It seems likely she attended the Daisy D school and taught in the first Hastings school around 1855.She and her husband later moved to Trenton, Ontario.
Another daughter (name unknown) married James Fife and another was Mrs. D. Kelly of Drummer Township.Another daughter lived in Pennsylvania in the USA as did a brother, Redmond Walsh, who served on the Union side in the American Civil War.Another son, John Walsh, was the father of Richard "Drover Dick" Walsh.
