28 Oct 1955letter Mary Shannon to Viola Meede:
Dear Niece:Well it was just 2 days to be 3 months that your dad was in the hospital, they brought him home Tuesday and got a wheel chair thought I could take care of him but could not do it - alone as it took 2 nurses at the hospital to put him in a wheel chair and 2 to put him to bed, he can't help himself at all, so Thursday morning he said he would go to Larimore it is 30 miles from here and won't be able to see him so often.I felt so bad yesterday I could not cry, he told me to have some masses said if he should die.I don't see why God sends so much sorrow to some, they got St. Michael ambulance to take him to Larimore. He was just sick being at the hospital he was so glad when they told him they were taking him home.Poor man it was a short duration. He was well treated there and received Holy Communion every morning as there is a priest there all the time. And we have three priests in our parish and they would go and see him.I done the best I could but could not stand it as it would not be long I would have to go to the hospital or get a stroke I am so nervous.I packed all his things up and put them in my room, as it was no use to pay for a room he was not using.I do hope he comes back well and sound.I was baby sitting 4 times a week so gave up my job to take care of him,but I think I can get it back again if I want it.Thanks for the picture.Love to you xxxx and RoseMarie xxxxyour Aunt Mary

Mary Shannon to Viola Meede, 25 May 1958:
letter 19 Mar 1958 Mary Shannon to Viola Meede:
Dear Niece:Received your letter some time ago, but have been sick for 5 weeks now had the shingles. They last a long time and sure painful.I seem to get everything and still go to the doctor for my blood pressure.I don't know how long that will last.Still taking pills.I was sure surprised to get a letter from Joe Bruno after not hearing from him for 17 or 18 years.Maybe he was in jail who knows he still goes by the name of Tefoe. The last letter I wrote to him he didn't get a very good reception from me.He never was any good when he was around Pembina.Martha and her man was here before Christmas and Esther was coming soon.I am 4 blocks from the church and still can't walk that far only neighbors from the country stop and take me but have not gone for 5 Sundays now as I was not able.I wish I could get well or God take me that is what your dad often said.He used to be so glad when I would go and see him some times he would cry to see me and cry when I would go.We sure had a nice winter. The ground was bare most of the time we had no snow forChristmas.I never seen the likes of it - before they say that - Fred Monette is at the old people's home here.I must go and see when I get well and there is others that I know are there.Harry Monette and his wife go to California every fall. She gets a job waiting on the table and he gets a job also. They will be coming back next month it is so funny the girls didn't get a cent of their dad's money.I guess Harry got the most of it.He didn't make any will and Ida worked so hard and saved and got nothing.Well, we sure had a grand winter hardly any snow to speak of.I sure had a good Christmas last year, was invited out in the country for dinner and got a bucket from the church $5.00 from Ida $2.00 from Martha and a fruit-cake $l.00 from Florence and you $2.00 and Cecilina $3.00 Rosanna $1.00 and pair of slippers and a friend of mine from Calif. $1.00. and another friend send me stationery and 2 turkish towels so God was good to me.Money was better than other gifts- Esther send me home baked goods.I suppose you don't hear from Earl very often. Will close with my best of love.Write when you can.God bless you all.your Aunt Mary

Mrs. Mary Shannon to Mrs. Paul Meede: Arlington, Mass.25 May, 1958Dear Viola:Thought I would write to you as life is so uncertain as I am 78 years old soon will be 79.I think you made a mistake in giving those checks to Earl, as you dad had his name sign at the bottom only, if he had sign at the top also than you could have cashed them any place. My mind is more clear now he told me you could only cash them at the First National Bank if I had ask for Mr. Orth the cashier maybe I could have cash them but the clerks didn't know any thing about them and I was so sick then, I did not want them in my possession in case I should pass out, if I was you I would see Mr. Orth the cashier first, as your dad told Mr. Orth about you and were intended for you but never mentioned Earl as I know Earl was kind of sore at your dad about the divorce he put all the blame on your dad but none on your mother that is what your dad said, as Earl never wrote to his dad for a long time after he wrote and when he did write you dad didn't care to answer.I told him he should but he didn't want too.The way Earl treated him, Earl went to see the house in Baudette passed thru G. F. but never stopped to see his dad.I knew he felt bad about it, he put all the blame on his dad and none on his mother and she was to blame for it all.(Running around said Baudette residents after other men and in Jolliett went to dances with salesmen, . and Fr. Bossus, andone priest transferred - She took Henry to Massachutes for war work- she followed some guy - and Henry stayed quite a number of years, and the fighting must have increased) And when she came to G. F. she tried to put the blame on me but I didn't know nothing about it until your dad told me he was going to get a divorce but I never told him what to do.I went to see the doctor last week and my blood pressure was 177 it should be 140 or 145 so he change my medicine, have to take it twice a day.Esther and Florence were coming to see me in January but Esther was sick and in the hospital for a couple weeks after she got better she sent me some home bak goods and I think they will come in June.I still gave those stockings you send me one Christmas one pair has a run on and one pair I just started to wear them and the other pair are good yet, only darn them at the feet.I use them only for good.We sure had a nice winter, no snow to speak about and no icy walks.Ida said it snowed in Mpls on Easter Sunday but never a speak here.Marthas mother in law passed away on May 14th, it kept them busy going to see her in drayton hospital. They used to come quite often but they have not come none since before Christmas, many thanks for the Easter card.I did not get to the stores to get any.love to you xxx and your family xxx God bless you all, your Aunt Mary

Dear Niece:13 July 1958Received your letter maybe I didn't make myself clear or may have left some of it out.Your dad was not sore about Earl not coming to see him, Darl didn't write to him for a long long time so he didn't care to write to him.Period.and about the house, who told him I dont know but he always had a way of finding things out. Mr. Orth didn't have a thing to do about traverers checks your dad ask for them so when he wanted money in a hurry he could just sign his name and get some and a bond it is not that easy.Earl send me an Easter card and I wrote to him right away to S. Caroline but my letter came back again perhaps he was not yet there.I was going to try again my nieces here are very good to me they come and see me and write to me.Martha lives in St. TAhomas and Esther, Florence and Cecilia lives in St. Vincent and Ida went to Salem Oregon to her vacation to visit Edlor and Rose and the three boys and Harry Monette and his wife are in California he rented his farm for cash and they both work out there and Fred Monette is at the old people's home here, he is the one of that family left. They are very good to me where I am staying they told me if I want to go any place just tell them and they will take me in their car the the bus passes right by have just across the road to go, but I wish my legs were alright so I could walk some distance have friends 2 blocks and 3 1/2 blacks but have not went to see them yet.Did Earl tell you he wrote to the judge and so the judge wrote to me thought I could handle it for him so wrote and told him I was under the doctors care. and could not handle it.Have not felt good the last two weeks and today I did not go to church as my legs ache although I have good neighbors in the country that takes me every Sunday otherwise I would not be able to go.it is four blocks to church.I take medicine for my nerves al all the medicine that I took thought I would never take so much.Have to answer Rosanna letter yet, so will close with love.God bless you all.Your Aunt, Mary
